St Kilda Training Report

Summary

Notable absentees
  • Lenny Hayes
  • Stephen Milne
  • Jarryd Allen (on crutches)
Player Highlights
  • Leigh Fisher looks to have improved in almost every area.
  • Max Hudghton was on the angry pills.
  • Jason Gram looked lazy but talented.
  • Stephen Baker completed most of training but did some run through work on his own under the eye of some of the trainers, my personal theory being they are looking at his running style.
  • Justin Koschitzke took some nice marks, kicking for goal was poor though.
  • Nick Riewoldt and Koschitzke were available to chat to with one of the young fans (who I think may have had cancer) was very nice to see.

Structure of training
  • Came out and did some light kick to kick
  • Did some jogging
  • Run through work
  • Stretching
  • More run through work
  • Stretching
  • Some circle work
  • Match simulation/light contested work
  • Warm down (after someone kicked a goal to earn this I believe, players were very happy.)
Player by Player Review (note it is hard to watch everyone so I will only be as detailed as I can)
#1 Jason Gram- Was quite disappointed in his work ethic today, either he was sore or lazy; I don’t know which to hope for. He does however look quite skilled and a cut above a lot of the team in terms of running ability.
#2 Steven King- Wanted to do extra work at times with the midfielders, looks a leader and looks lean, dropped a couple simple marks.
#3 Xavier Clarke- Looked very skinny, didn’t do a lot of the running, I think he was on a modified program as opposed to having any specific injury concerns.
#5 Ben McEvoy- Ran laps and ran them hard, very impressed by his work ethic, obviously wants a game. I may be getting him confused with one of the new rookies however 70% sure this was him.
#6 Leigh Fisher- Has taken great strides towards getting more games in 09, his bullet passes are perfect and he has lost a lot of weight, running capacity is much higher than years past.
#7 Lenny Hayes- Absent
#8 Max Hudghton- Very vocal, demanding the best from everyone and not accepting mistakes, trained pretty much flawlessly and looks very fit.
#10 Steven Baker- Looks strong as always ran quite fluidly most of the time, as mentioned earlier did some individual work.
#11 Leigh Montagna- Was very fit and very skilled session with quite a few accurate shots on goal. Hopefully we will see a big year from Montagna who was vocal and trained hard.
#12 Nick Riewoldt- Had great presence and really stood out in how cleanly he does everything, puffing hard as always, my only criticism is he could have been more vocal.
#13 Adam Schneider- Didn’t notice him at all, may have been absent.
#14 Luke Ball- Was very quite and struggled with disposal a bit, he looked exceptionally fit though.
#15 Michael Gardiner- Fit and skilled for a big man, strong vocal leads impressed me.
#16 Raphael Clarke- Toned down compared to last year, especially around the midriff. Was kicking the ball nicely and looked much more comfortable.
#17 Colm Begley- Didn’t notice Colm.
#18 Brendon Goddard- Disposal is easily the best in the team, Brendon was also very vocal, impressed.
#19 Sam Gilbert- A favorite of mine normally but did nothing to stand out and struggled with disposal at times.
#20 David Armitage- Trained very hard with lots of encouragement from the other players, looked much fitter.
#21 Nicholas Heyne- Not sure if I got the right Nick but at one point I think he copped a massive public (to the players) spray, followed by a lot of encouragement from the same coach later.
#22 Farren Ray- Didn’t notice Ray.
#23 Justin Koschitzke- Marked well on the end of good leads, disposal was lacking to finish of the good work though. Very vocal and approachable, could be in for a big year if he can kick straight.
#24 Sean Dempster- Didn’t notice Dempster.
#25 Sam Fisher- Like Riewoldt, is a stand out in how clean his football is, expect another big year from Sam.
#26 Nick Dal Santo- Disappointing for me doesn’t look much fitter (slightly stronger across the shoulders and chest) and disposal wasn’t as classy as normal.
#27 Jason Blake- Looks more and more suited to AFL football every time I see him, extremely fit.
#28 Rhys Stanley- Didn’t notice Rhys
#29 Tom Lynch- Smaller than I had imagined, did a lot of running.
#31 Mathew Maguire- Is a machine. His muscles are perfectly cut, struggled with disposal but looked like he hadn’t missed a beat in every other regard.
#32 Andrew McQualter- Mini did a lot of running; he has some sort of wrist injury I believe.
#33 James Gwilt- Very big and strong, looks a good flanker and his disposal was impressive.
#34 Jack Steven- Didn’t notice the man with two first names.
#36 Jarryd Allen- Injured on crutches but present.
#37 Eljay Connors- I did notice his name mentioned a bit but did nothing to stand out.
#38 Clinton Jones- Really improved when it comes to his disposal I think I only saw one iffy kick the whole time.
#39 Alistair Smith- Didn’t notice Smith at all.
#40 Robert Eddy- Ran hard and stood out in that regard and did well to blend in with regards to other attributes.
#41 Paul Cahill- Didn’t notice Paul.
#42 Jarryn Geary- Didn’t notice Geary
#44 Stephen Milne- Unfortunately Milne was absent.
