What are the different AFL clubs supporters like?
Adelaide: Crows supporters tend to vary; in day to day life they seem quite knowledgeable about our great game and more than capable of debating any issue in a civilized manner. At games however they get very feral, particularly as a Victorian in South Australia. Let’s assume they are a little too obsessed, perhaps because they get a bit bored over there?
Brisbane: The majority of Lions supporters tend to be of the fair weather variety, perhaps AFL is a bit too complex for a state that has historically been fed Rugby varieties, hopefully with the future Gold Coast team can help educate the retirement state and they can have a greater appreciation for a superior code.
Carlton: Going to a Carlton game used to be an experience, you’d come back from Optus Oval smelling of smoke and most likely (at least in my case) spat on. These days it’s good to know the fans have progressed to saying three words. Judd, Betts and Fev; seriously that was all the people around me were saying at the Carlton games I attended. Do yourselves a favor; look up the rest of the team.
Collingwood: Surprisingly I know quite a few intelligent Magpie fans; I like to think of them as the exception that proves the rule. This post really summarizes Pie fans in a nutshell.
Essendon: Until recently the ultimate bandwagon club, now I’m just sick of hearing the excuses. I don’t care about your injury problems, my clubs had more than its fair share! Hopefully most of the bandwagon from the underachieving years has fallen off!
Fremantle: I don’t know a single Dockers supporter, do you? I assume they are all the kids in WA who get picked on?
Geelong: How I hate Geelong, their supporters are okay, but the area and the team bother me. I feel most Geelong supporters actually think they won last year though, perhaps not the brightest folk?
Hawthorn: Hawks supporters are nice and vocal, however there are quite a few who are so arrogant they can’t compose a thought, basically it becomes a case of “no your wrong, buddyloooveee is the greatest player in the history of ANY sport already” I wouldn’t dare say he is overrated.
Melbourne: MCC members *cough* I mean Demon fans are ridiculous, would it kill you guys to come watch your boys play occasionally? Seriously skiing is a fun and all but your club needs you. I have to say though it was good to see you get on board the Debt Demolition campaign.
North Melbourne: Kangaroo supporters are great, if only you guys bred a bit more and got your kids into them, your club looked at moving everywhere there are so few of you.
Port Adelaide: See Fremantle.
Richmond: Love Tiger games, loud passionate and well supported; unfortunately you’d all eat your own young! Who spits on their coach? Richo deserves much more respect and support than you guys have given him historically, although you are seeing the light over the last few years.
St Kilda: You have to be forced to support my club, that or want a really big character building exercise. I find more and more St Kilda fans get under my skin at games these days, constantly berating our own players… the teaser of ’04 and ’05 has changed either who supports the Saints or at the very least the attitudes of the majority.
Sydney: See Brisbane, remove some passion.
West Coast: People in WA are very passionate about their sports, it’s fantastic but, you guys seem to have a culture of treating idiots too well. So much of your team have done the wrong thing, only for you all to turn a blind eye until it’s too late. I hope you learnt your lesson, last year and this year in the bottom 4 should help.
Western Bulldogs: A truly working class club, had to laugh when Rocket made the move from Sydney he stopped wearing his suit, whether out of comfort or to prevent alienating the fans you tell me?
I’d like to point out this was meant purely as a tongue in cheek article, I’m sure it’s nowhere near as funny as I’d like it to be, but this is my first attempt at a humor piece. Please be gentle on me.

West Coast made some mistakes no doubt but that was a rare blimp in an outstanding first 25 years. We have a culture of success and we expect it and that’s not a bad thing. We’ve done our time and we’ve bounced back to the quickly which is proof of a winning culture. I wouldn’t say we’re easy on them (it’s probably the best culture in AFL now after having brought in SAS trainers as consultants after ’07), we’re just loyal and in for the long haul. More flags aren’t that far away and I know most Vic’s hate that fact but you can’t stop us. We’ve been driving the entire economy for years, flags are easy compared to that. After this post you add the words arrogant to your list
) fun post James, thanks. Scotty will be good for you guys, I know him well and saw what he did with Subi in the WAFL, hang in there!
