Brisbane – 17.9 (111)
Essendon – 9.14 (68)
Matthew Lloyd finally kicked his 900th goal in Dustin Fletchers 300th game, but it wasn’t enough as his Bombers were thumped by a Brisbane side desperate to redeem itself. In a horror night for Fletcher to play his 300th the star defender also went down with an ankle injury. Rebounding from a 93 point smashing from Geelong, the Lions dominated all night to run out 43 point winners. Jonathan Brown and Daniel Bradshaw kicked 9 goals between them, 5 and 4 respectively. Luke Power dominated the midfield and also pushed forward to kick 3.1 in what was a good all round effort from the lions.
Turning points of the match Halfway through the first quarter, after a tightly fought 10 or so minutes, Jonathan Brown kicked the first goal of the night and it was all Brisbane from there. Key Players for Brisbane Luke Power – Dominated the middle with 24 disposals and 5 tackles. Pushed forward early in the game to kick 3.1 to kick start his team. Jonathan Brown – Looked strong up forward once again kicking 5 straight goals from 13 grabs. Travis Johnstone – 28 hard fought disposals with 6 marks to add to it. Key Players for Essendon Jobe Watson – As usual was the Bombers leading possession getter with 36. He also took 6 marks to add to that. Jason Winderlich – Easily the best player for Essendon on the night. Gathering 23 touches with 11 marks he played well all game, and also managed to kick 2 important goals to try and keep his team in it. Musings from the match · Scott Lucas was once again goalless, did someone say VFL? · VFL is out of the question for Lucas though because coach Matthew Knights says he has to persevere with his stars, and he did manage 7 marks, 15 touches and a behind. · Daniel Bradshaw kicked all of his goals in the second half of the last quarter when the game was already decided. · Matthew Lloyd kicked his 900th after taking a great mark, also managed a second not long after apparently just needing to get over the milestone. · Essendon continue their trend of winning a close one and then getting comprehensively beaten, this is the inconsistency I talked about in my season preview for them. · Essendon kicked 9.14 once again showing us they need to improve on their conversion. · On the flipside Brisbane kicked 17.9 showing they can kick straight when their forwards are switched on. Supercoach news Sam Sheldon – Played his first game and managed 40 points from 10 possessions, a mark and 2 tackles. Could be a good one to watch over the next couple of weeks if you’re looking to trade down a rookie who has gone up in price. Daniel Rich – Continues to make people happy by increasing in value. 15 disposals with 3 marks and 8 tackles doesn’t hurt his score of 78 this week, which is down on his average but will mean he continues to rise. Cale Hooker – Played his first game of the year getting 14 disposals. Only managed 4 hit outs trying to support Ryder but could be a good cheap addition to your team who should get games with David Hille out. Dustin Fletcher – The 300 gamer injured his ankle in the 3rd quarter and didn’t return. He could be in trouble for next week so watch out for this if you have the superstar.
