Geelong vs. Sydney – Round 7 Review

Geelong vs. Sydney

Geelong 17.14.116 d.
Sydney 10.5.65

Geelong has continued its winning streak in 2009 with a convincing win over the Sydney Swans down at Skilled Stadium. Geelong welcomed back Captain Tom Harley and Vice Captain Cameron Ling who both got through the game. The Cats led at every change, winning by 51 points at the final siren.

Turning Point of the Match

After a tight first quarter the Cats gained the ascendancy in the second through Steve Johnson. Johnson who had kicked the Cats only first quarter goal continued to kick 3 more in the second to give Geelong a handy buffer early in the second. From this point on Geelong looked to have the match under control. Every time the Swans got a run on the Cats answered and extended their lead.

Key Players for Geelong

Steve Johnson – Brilliant first half of football. Kicked 4 goals in the half and also missed just as many. Had 17 of his 28 possessions in the first half and set up the Geelong win. Also had 4 scoring assists to help set up the win for the Cats.

Cameron Mooney – One of his best games up forward for the season. Took ten marks and 9 inside 50’s, also kicked 3 goals straight for the Cats. The thing that I liked the most was his kicking from around the 40 to 50 meter mark.

Joel Selwood – Stepped up in the absence of Ablett. A very solid 34 possessions, including 4 clearances and 4 inside 50’s, with 9 possessions being contested.

Matthew Scarlett – Kept Barry Hall to a total of 5 disposals for the match. Hall didn’t touch the ball after half time. Was down on his disposals only having 8 but did what he had to, to stop Barry Hall.

Key Players for Sydney

Adam Goodes – Standout player for the swans. 27 disposals with 8 inside 50’s along with his 8 clearances. Also kicked 2 goals, if only the Swans could have a few more like him.

Michael O’Loughlin – Only had 5 touches but of those kicked 3 goals and had one score assist. Without him the swans would have lost by a lot more. The only forward that looked dangerous. Sydney need him to do this every week if they want to kick enough goals.

Jude Bolton – Had an admirable 21 disposals for the swans with 4 inside 50’s. had a game high eleven tackles and tried hard. Again if only the swans could have more than one of him.

Musings from the Match

• Geelong were able to cope well without Ablett, with Selwood, Corey and Johnson all stepping up.
• Was Geelong Captain Tom Harleys’ first game of season 2009.
• Barry Hall had a terrible day, argued with the umpire after every contest, just didn’t look good.
• The Cats only had 395 disposals for the game well down on their usual tally.
• Sydney seem to have too many passengers, not enough players who want to put in 100% when the going is tough.
• Hawkins was able to kick some long goals, always brings a smile to Geelong fans faces.

Supercoach

Steve Johnson had a total of 146 points, both Selwood and Corey also ranked high. Matthew Stokes had one of his best Supercoach games with 133 point up o his average of 98. Both Bartel and Chapman were down on previous weeks. Goodes ranked highest with a solid 112 points, on the other end of the scale Barry Hall had a grand total of (drum roll please) 11 points.
