Western Bulldogs vs. Sydney – Round 10 match recap

Western Bulldogs – 18.9 (117)
Sydney Swans–12.5 (77)

The Sydney Swans set out to embarrass us at ContestedFooty (in particular myself) for having the audacity to tip them and call this our match of the round in our weekly preview.

The theory went that the hard disciplined style of the Swans would be able to test, if not overcome, the hard running and efficient Bulldogs. How wrong we were. As good as the Dogs’ have been over the last few weeks and that’s very good, Sydney made them look better than they are. The Swans looked old, slow and unskilled against a Bulldogs side that ran hard and shows no signs of slowing down in its quest for a top 4 spot this year.
At least we learnt a few things; one the Swans are no good, two the Dogs are better than a lot of us have given them credit for and three teams are favorites for a reason more often than not James!

Turning points of the match
Sydney never really looked the good but an 8 goal to none second quarter really put the game beyond a doubt, in fact the Swans won the last two quarters but the game had already been decided by that point.

Key Players for the Western Bulldogs
Daniel Giansiracusa– Despite some close checking from his Swans opponents Gia’ managed 3 goals and 26 touches, pleasingly he worked hard off the ball as well.

Adam Cooney– Like Giansiracusa, Cooney copped a reasonable tag in the form of Ablett and again much like Gia’ it didn’t seem to affect him too much- Adam accumulated 24 disposals and snuck onto the scorers sheet with two goals, in what was a much needed return to form.

Scott Welsh– Presented nicely all day and got duly rewarded with 4 goals.

Mitch Hahn- Really stepped up in the second quarter, when the Dogs won the match and finished with 3 goals.

Key Players for the Sydney Swans
Adam Goodes– As a St Kilda supporter I haven’t seen Goodes dominate many games, in this one he almost played a lone hand; finished with 30 touches, worked hard all day.

Ryan O’Keefe- Really showed his class in a losing team, 31 quality touches.

Brett Kirk- Tagged Griffen and restricted him well whilst also gaining 28 disposals of his own.

Musings from the match
• Sydney really let themselves, not to mention me, down.

• The Bulldogs are a contender.
• Luke Ablett went off injured in the third, looks like some sort of shoulder injury.
• Statistically the Swans didn’t get smashed however they just weren’t as clean and efficient around the ground as the Bulldogs.
• The Swans leave too much to too few.
• The Bulldogs by contrast have a nice spread of players doing the work and look flexible.
• Hall’s statistics flatter a game he struggled to have an impact on until it was too late.
• Shaun Higgins still looks the goods.

SuperCoach news
My Rule of having now Sydney players seems to have a few exceptions in Adam Goodes (160 points!) and Ryan O’Keefe(138 points!) but you can see why I have this rule when you look through their team, 9 players with 50 points or less is disgraceful.

Shaun Higgins showed no signs of slowing down as a result of his groin injury scoring 120 SuperCoach points.

Adam Cooney looks to have turned the corner over the last few weeks and delivered a respectable 109 points from this game.
