Carlton 16.16. 112 def.
Brisbane Lions 16.10. 106
Carlton has defeated Brisbane in a close encounter at the Gabba. It was the story of the key forwards with Fevola up one end kicking 8 and an at time wasteful Jonathon Brown kicking 4 goals 5 behinds. The game was in the balance all night but a rampaging Brisbane just ran out of time in the end. All the likely suspects were their for the Blues with Judd and Murphy both having an impact on the game.
Turning Point of the Match
Very difficult to identify the turning point of the match as the game wasn’t ever won until late in the final term. Carlton was in front for most of the game set up by a great first half of football. During the second half Brisbane gained some ascendancy with the aid of Jonathon Brown.
Key Players for Brisbane
Jonathon Brown – Was the focal point in the forward line for the Lions taking 13 marks for the night and kicking 4 goals 5. It was his ineffectiveness which was his only downside for the night only having a 53% effectiveness rating.
Simon Black – Was very impressive in the Midfield for the Lions having a total of 33 possessions. 7 clearances and 5 inside 50s for the night in what was another great game for this great player.
Jared Brennan – 24 touches and kicked 4 goals for the night. Brought the ball into the 50 on 7 occasions and really impressed with his skills.
Key Players for Carlton
Brendan Fevola – Fevola was well and truly on tonight kicked 8 goals 3 for the match. With Brisbane lacking their major back men Fevola needed to dominate and did.
Chris Judd – Might as well have this man here every game. The ever consistent Judd had 28 disposals and helped to set up the win for the Blues. A huge 10 clearances, 7 inside 50s and 13 contested possessions.
Marc Murphy – Had 25 disposals for the night and really impressed with his skills. 5 clearances and 7 inside 50s. Looks to be growing as a player, really enjoy watching him play the game.
Musings from the Match
• The Brisbane backline had no answer for the Fevola show
• Judd is just that good, will defiantly poll well in this years Brownlow
• Could have been a different result if Brown could have kicked straight
• Carlton has moved into the top 4 in what could be a pivotal win in season 2009 for them.
• Brendan Fevola had an equal career best of 8 goals against the Lions, will he ever kick more?
• Brennan kicked two absolutely brilliant goals, he is a freak.
