In the gun?

Often after one coach is sacked it has a ripple effect throughout the other clubs. The reason for this isn’t clear but some of the reasons could include; it isn’t as big of a news story once one club has already done it, the first club usually makes their change late into the season, potential coaches put their hands up for a job and clubs may want a coach that has just been sacked.

Whatever the cause, it is recognized that it happens in the football world and because of this potentially six un-contracted coaches are in the gun.

Those coaches are; Dean Laidley (North Melbourne), Mick Malthouse (Collingwood), Rodney Eade (Western Bulldogs), Mark Williams (Port Adelaide), John Worsfold (West Coast) and Mark Thompson (Geelong). Of them you would assume Rodney Eade and Mark Thompson are safe as their clubs have been performing, the rest have different situations.

Dean Laidley replaced Denis Pagan as coach of the Kangaroos in 2003; he has coached 147 games winning 72 of them a respectable strike rate over that time period. As the Kangaroos are a mid range team at best at the moment and are getting the games into the younger players questions will be posed about Laidley and if he is the best man for the job, I’d expect him to get a contract extension but if North slip beyond their current position (12th) the story maybe different.

Mick Malthouse and the Collingwood football club have the weakest bond they have had since Malthouse started coaching the Magpies in the year 2000. Malthouse has served the Collingwood Football Club well over the journey coaching them to two Grand Final losses against the Brisbane Lions; his coaching record over his career includes 294 wins from 529 games, which is a very good record from 23 years. Malthouse’s team sits 6th at the moment and after 9 years I’d expect he’d want to stay in the top 8 all year or the pressure will build for someone new and exciting to take over his current role.

Mark Williams will not be coaching Port Adelaide next year. Having coached 247 games and delivered 142 wins and a premiership this seems strange, but it has been obvious for some time Williams and the powers within the club have a strained relationship; things as simple as choosing a captain for the club have been disagreed on and made public. Williams still wants to coach, that point he has made clear, the questions are though will he get offered a role elsewhere and do his current board want him at the club going forward? For there to be any chance of him sticking around I’d expect the Power need to not only make finals but win one as well.

John Worsfold is a good premiership winning coach at a strong club; whilst his club is rebuilding and other options will be looked at by the Eagles; they won’t and shouldn’t go past the man who has won them 97 games from the 176 he has been involved in. The Eagles have a good young side and an experienced quality coach; I wouldn’t count them out for long.

Terry Wallace and the Richmond Football Club have been responsible for the first shot in terms of moving coaches on; It’ll be interesting to see who else pulls the trigger on their coaches tenure and if they do how and when they do it will be just as fascinating to watch.

What are your thoughts on the coaches chances of a new contract? Where will they end up?
