ContestedFooty’s start of the year preview
8th to 10th At the start of the year we looked at how Richmond went last year, they showed some promise and finished a disappointing 9th. With the addition of Ben Cousins and another year many expected a surge up the ladder from the Tigers, we weren’t so confident it would have a massive impact, but we expected improvement. See the preview here.

Current Situation
After a hard start to the year Richmond and Terry Wallace have parted ways, remarkably Richmond are only 3 wins out of the top 8 and have hit some form winning two of their last three games. I highly doubt they will make the top eight, but they have an opportunity to gain some respect by finishing 9th or 10th if they can maintain some form between now and the rest of the year.

Backline
Whilst we thought Richmond’s backline was solid at the start of the year, they have conceded more points than any other team in the league so far in 2009. They have the ability to contain opposition sides and launch their own offence from defense; hopefully they look to work harder to achieve that result over the next few weeks.

Midfield
What was deemed as a huge strength of the Richmond list has surely underperformed so far in 2009, much like the rest of the list. Richmond’s on-ball brigade has been disappointing, especially by foot, when you consider the class you have through there.
To their credit they have turned around their form over the last three weeks and if they continue in that vein they might be the catalyst for Richmond’s mini revival in the second half of this year; providing a launching pad for next year.

Forwards
Richmond’s forward line has been okay so far this year, especially with the absence of Mathew Richardson. Players such as Jack Riewoldt, Brett Deledio and Mitch Morton have really lifted and look to be the nucleus of a good attack into the future, perhaps they need to work harder the other way but with more opportunity the Richmond forward line will definitely have more of an impact on the scoreboard.

Coach
Jade Rawlings as caretaker coach has a perfect record and made no apologies for taking a hard line approach at selection. His role at Richmond shouldn’t be underestimated and he will be a big part of determining how Richmond is situated come the start of the 2010 season.

Best Performed Player
Nathan Foley- the 23 year old midfielder has been amazingly consistent in a team that isn’t. So far this year he averages 27 touches and 5 tackles, a real work horse, Foley is a future leader of the Tigers and really sets an example for his team mates to follow.

Looking Forward
Richmond are a club that to me just scream potential, it’s a shame they haven’t delivered. They are a bit too outside and don’t have the footskills to do anything too significant but they are definitely better than their ladder position indicates. Now that a lot of the players know they are playing for their future at the Tigers we should start seeing some better results. If I were to guess I’d have them 10th-12th at season’s end.
