One of the greatest Home and Away games has set up a fascinating race home to the finals. Who is in and who is out of my Top and Bottom fours of this week.
THE TOP FOUR
1. WHAT A GAME. Finally a game that actually lives up to the hype. The St Kilda vs. Geelong clash was one of the best home and away matches I have witnessed for a very long time. The Saints jumped the Cats in the first but past that it was an extremely close affair. I only hope these two teams can meet again in September for another epic clash. The question is can the Saints now go undefeated in 2009?
2. DEMON DELIGHT – The Melbourne Football Club should be congratulated on their handling of the entire week. With the news of Jim Stynes shocking much of the football world the club and players responded with a win against West Coast. I particularly liked the number 37 jumper being the centre-piece of the day and the overall effort by the Melbourne players. Great show of respect for a great football man.
3. WOOF WOOF – The Bulldogs are well and truly a contender in season 2009 with an impressive victory over a dismal Hawthorn. The Dogs have won their last 5 matches since their narrow loss to the Cats in Round 9. The Dogs are playing some great football and are attacking beautifully, being rated second-best in attack this season. The boys from the West are well and truly in the hunt.
4. MICHAEL GARDINER– Here is a guy that was almost lost to the football world and is now back and having a huge impact. His four goals on Sunday against the Cats helped set the side up for victory. His huge mark with only minutes to go won the Saints the game. It is really good to see someone come back into the football mix and prove themselves. Also honorable mention to a one Ben Cousins.
THE BOTTOM FOUR
1. IS THE DREAM OVER– Currently set firmly into my bottom four- the Hawthorn football club has appeared again! After a terrible display against the Dogs on Saturday night Hawks fans everywhere must be thinking about what is going wrong. With Buddy not kicking goals and the side not kicking a goal in the first half; the alarm bells are ringing for the Hawks. Hawthorn now sit 11th on the ladder with a percentage of only 88%, the 5th worst in the league. It is going to be a tough task for the Hawks to even make the eight this season let alone defend its title.
2. BRENNAN HEADBUTT – I don’t know what Josh Carr does to get under peoples skin, but whatever it is he does an amazing job. Young Jared Brennan is Carr’s most recent victim after a head butt during the final term in their clash on Saturday afternoon. Brennan faces one week on the sideline for the level 4 head butt. It is one of the more frowned upon things to do to an opponent and Brennan will be ruing this mistake for the next week.
3. STEVIE JOHNSON WITHDRAWAL– My only disappointment as a Cats fan on Sunday was the late news that Steven Johnson was a late withdrawal. Johnson is the leading goal kicker at the club and a very important part of the side if we are to be serious contenders come September. ‘Would have loved to have seen him out there on Sunday because he would have helped the Geelong forward line immensely. Having said that, I did enjoy watching former school mate Simon Hogan run around for the Cats.
4. BARRY DO WE CARE? – The news circulating that Barry Hall may resign from the Swans probably comes as no surprise, but do we care? The only issue I have with Hall adding fuel to this speculation is that it puts the club in a very difficult situation, and is the type of publicity the Swans do not need. The turning off of any Sydney people could hurt the club in future years with the creation of a second Sydney team.
