Brent’s Weekly Bite

Here are the top and bottom four AFL news topics for the past week.

THE TOP FOUR
1. DEEE-LICIOUS – For the second week in a row the Melbourne Football Club has made my weekly top 4 and for good reason. The cellar dwellers have moved from bottom position after defeating Port Adelaide on the weekend. Liam Jurrah was magnificent and helped set up the demons second win in a row. Great to see that the club has seemingly lifted after the news of Jim Stynes.
2. CROWS IN TOWN – Adelaide are establishing their claim for 2009 glory after another impressive victory in round 15. The crows demolished Fremantle and are looking all of contended. A big test for them this week coming up against the undefeated St.Kilda. Adelaide sit in 5th position on the ladder equal on wins with both the Bulldogs and Pies. They have won their last five in a row and are playing a very attacking style of football that seems to suit them. Do we think they are a danger to the saints this week?
3. FEVOLA – The Fev show was well and truly on in round 15 with the start forward helping his side to victory over Richmond. Fevola kicked 9 goals and 1 behind in a very impressive display. Interestingly he only was able to manage 4 marks but was still able to dominate. A couple of his goals were unbelievable one well and truly staking its claim for goal of the year. I enjoy watching Fevola you always get the good, the bad and the sometimes ugly.
4. FRIDAY NIGHT DELIGHT – Its great when to teams in form go toe to toe, often though these games never live up to the expectation. However Friday nights clash with the Bulldogs and Collingwood certainly did. The game was all but over until a resurgent Bulldog outfit came home with the wind in their sails and pushing right to the line to lose only by one point. The Dogs who looked in good form let this one slip and now the race for the top 4 has been re-invigorated with 3 teams looking for two spots.

THE BOTTOM FOUR
1. FREO OH NO – The Dockers were at the mercy of Adelaide on Saturday night and were only able to manage one goal seven behinds for the game. They remained scoreless in the second term and were never in the game. A defeat by 117 points was the end result. My issue with the Dockers is one week they show plenty of spirit and heart e.g. the game against Geelong, and then they are able to dish up a performance like this. Is the team from Fremantle a one game a month side?
2. NO POWER- While I am on the topic of interstate teams who are up and down like a yo-yo Port Adelaide spring to mind. On the weekend the Power lost to the Demons and frankly they never really looked like winning in my opinion. The week before they were able to beat the more fancied Brisbane Lions but then the week after they are beaten by the former bottom side on the ladder. The issue is that Port has the chance to play finals this year but now sit in 9th position one game and percentage out of the eight. The task is becoming more difficult and I don’t know if they are able the make the finals in 2009.
3. 9 LIVES – The injury crisis down at Cat land continued this week with no less than seven changes to the team that lost to St.Kilda. Geelong has now used 33 players in 2009 but the interesting thing this round was the cats had less than 30 players to choose from. I understand injuries are no excuse but when you look at the players out most are regulars in the best 22, many being in the best 11. Those who Geelong really need back are Scarlett, Milburn, Mackie, Steve Johnson, Ablett, Ottens, Ling, Kelly and also Varcoe. How many players will the Cats welcome back for the clash against Melbourne personally I hope for at least 5.
4. MUSTANG SAMMY – After watching the Football show on Thursday night I was impressed with the interview that Newman had with Barry Hall. Then on Friday it was Newman in the news fro all the wrong reasons with an alleged incident with his and a female’s car. I personally don’t care that this has occurred; okay what Newman did was wrong if it did happen but I would argue many of those who jump to criticize people like Sam Newman are not perfect themselves. I would just say that many people firstly park badly and also get upset about their cars. So do we really care? Is this really news worthy?
