Brent’s Weekly Bite

Another look into the week that was in football.

THE TOP FOUR
PERFECT SEASON – The St Kilda football club is on its way toward a perfect season with another crushing defeat of a supposed challenger on the weekend. Even with some big names out the Saints were able to continue on their merry way notching up win number 17. The question is can the Saints do the unthinkable and win every game in season 2009? Every week I am becoming more of a believer. What do we all think of the Saints chances?

RIVALRY ROUND – Many people question how legitimate rivalry round is and can be. I really enjoyed this round as I think that the rivalries were well thought out. The Round also produced some very good games, Geelong vs. Hawthorn and also the Richmond vs. Essendon game. I personally think that the themed rounds are a great idea and should continue. Do people agree with this?

JUST A POINT – As a Geelong supporter I couldn’t help but put this into my top four this week. Jimmy (not James) Bartel’s match winning point on the weekend capped off a great come back for the Cats and a great game of AFL football. The Cats were able to come from nowhere and steal victory from a Hawthorn team who played some really good football. The Hawks finals dream looked all but over. Some help from other clubs however sees them still in with a chance……Who will gain 8th spot in season 2009?

RAWLINGS TIGERS – Jade Rawlings and the Richmond Football club had another good week with a victory against Essendon. Personally I think the club is now looking to be heading in a good direction and playing some exciting football. Rawlings cannot be underestimated in this new Tiger attitude nor can one Ben Cousins who brings a lot to the team. If Richmond wants a senior coach for next season, I think Rawlings has to be front runner.

THE BOTTOM FOUR

19th MAN – Scott Welsh what were you thinking? I don’t understand how a player cannot possibly look at the board at three quarter time to see if he is starting on the ground. Welsh’s error cost a goal when the Bulldogs were within striking range at the start of the last quarter. The Saints went on to win easily but who knows how close it may have been before the infringement. Terrible, terrible mistake from a man who should know better.

FEMALE CALLERS - On the weekend Kelli Underwood called the Geelong and Hawthorn encounter and personally I had no problems with the job she did. She is the first female to call an AFL game and I guess some people will not enjoy the call as much but I think it’s something people will become used to. Did any body have an issue with her calling the Game?

BOMBERS CHOKE – Essendon lost a game on the weekend to Richmond I think no-one expected them to. With the opportunity to plan in finals in 2009 Essendon looked far from a finals team against Richmond. Essendon had a massive chance to put themselves into a great position for finals in 2009 but have now left the door ajar for other teams like the Hawks to gain 8th position. I can only imagine the disappointment of the Essendon fans. Ben how are you feeling?

TANK HOLTS – Tanking does it happen or doesn’t it that is the question. Well after this round I think it is clear that Tanking is not a common practice in the AFL. How a team of athletes could possibly be told to go out and not win is beyond me. I don’t believe it could and or does happen. Yes clubs may put players in for surgery early but the 22 men that take the field all would want to win. These men play for success and failure hurts, nobody likes losing even if it is for a priority pick.
