St Kilda – 15.15 (105)
Adelaide – 7.6 (48)
An intense St Kilda ran out comfortable winners against a Crows side that started well but simply couldn’t match it with their well drilled opponents who found another gear or two after quarter time.
Big Moment
St Kilda’s 6 goal second term really set up the match for them, especially in contrast to the one goal the Crows managed- significantly the Adelaide players looked confused by St Kilda’s zone with most players at this time kicking backwards or sideways.
Key Players for St Kilda
Nick Riewoldt – The St Kilda captain stood up early and got the better of Bock throughout the game. Riewoldt finished with 4 goals 5 behinds among 19 touches.
Lenny Hayes – As always a real workhorse, Hayes laid 10 tackles and accumulated 34 disposals along the way.
Farren Ray – Hard running saw Ray rewarded with 39 touches and a goal in what has to be Ray’s best game for the St Kilda Football Club.
Key Players for Adelaide
Simon Goodwin – One of the few who didn’t panic for the Crows- finished with 29 touches but a lot of them came as a loose man.
Brodie Martin – Played his first game and wasn’t disgraced in a positive for the Crows- kicked a goal and had 16 touches.
Musings from the match
• Adelaide looked much better when they ran hard and took the game on.
• Justin Koschitzke split his webbing and may have some tribunal worries- put him down as doubtful for next week.
• St Kilda’s physicality really rattled the Crows.
• Steven Baker played his best game for the year.
• David Mackay pulled his hamstring.
• Adelaide got confused by the zone.
• Steven King was very lazy and shouldn’t hold his spot on the return of Gardiner. (who was a late withdrawal)
• The game was exciting early before deteriorating as Adelaide took the game on less and St Kilda conserved energy.
Supercoach news
As often happens these days St Kilda had a lot of players (9) score over 100 SuperCoach Points with Nick Riewoldt (145) and Lenny Hayes (146) leading the way.
For the Crows it was a different story with only Nathan Bock (111) and Simon Goodwin (101) breaking the 100 point barrier. Brodie Martin will be worth keeping an eye on for next year though scoring 66 points in his first game.
Watch out for the injuries to Justin Koschitzke and David Mackay as well!
