Last Saturday morning past Tigers player and current CEO of the AFLPA (Australian Football League Players Association) Brendon Gale accepted the position to be the Richmond Football Club’s new Chief Executive Officer.
Gale, will be replacing current CEO Steve Wright, who will be stepping down from his position at the end of this season, in order to deal with an ongoing illness called Guillain Barre Syndrome (an illness affecting the nervous system).
Wright will finish this year after 5 years at the helm and has been influential in turning the Tigers from a financial hole into a profitable team with record memberships and sponsorships. He will remain at the club next season in a consultancy role in the redevelopment of Punt Roads facilities.
Gale stated that he had no intention of taking on the responsibilities of a Club CEO until he was approach by Gary March in earlier weeks.
He made his intentions known at a press conference yesterday where he stated that he wanted the Tigers to again be bracketed with strong league forces Carlton, Essendon and Collingwood.
Brendon Gale played for Richmond from 1990-2001, as a centre half forward player and later ruckman-forward. He ended his career having played 244 games.
He was commonly recognised on the field by long hair and a strong physique, which supporters believed resembled “Tarzan”, which is a nickname he was give.
In 2005 he became the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Rules Football Players association and remained in this role until he had been appointed Richmond’s new CEO.
Gale has already left his role and CEO of the AFLPA, and will immediately join the sub-committee which is currently in the process of searching for a full time coach for the Tigers.
