Adam Simpson joins Hawthorn as Assistant Coach

Former North Melbourne dual premiership player and former captain Adam Simpson has joined the Hawthorn Football Club as assistant coach for season 2010.

Last Friday night, Hawthorn confirmed that Simpson (who retired this season), would be joining their coaching staff underneath Coach Alistair Clarkson as the clubs midfield coach. Previously Damien Hardwick held the midfield position with the Hawks, until he was appointed the Senior Coach of Richmond in August.

Simpson will be bringing to the Hawks much experience as a former player and leader of the modern game of AFL.

Adam Simpson at the age of 33 announced his retirement from the game in July this year after a stunning 306 game career with North Melbourne. When announcing his retirement from the game he said he would like to pursue a career in coaching if the opportunity arose. Simpsons 306 game career spanned across 15 seasons and included the 1996 and 1999 Premierships and captaining the Roos from 2004 till 2008. In 2002 he was a member of the All Australian Team and won the clubs best and fairest award.

After announcing his retirement, Simpson spent the last four weeks of the season working alongside North Melbourne’s coaches and football department. He also took part in a pilot program with the AFL Coaches Association this year, something which was surely preparing him for life after playing the game and heading in the coaching direction.
