Hawthorn Best and Fairest 2009 – Peter Crimmins Medal

Hawthorn Captain Sam Mitchell has been awarded his second Peter Crimmins Medal for the Best and Fairest. Mitchell won the award on 170 votes 47 ahead of Cyril Rioli who continued his rise up the AFL ranks. Lance Franklin placed 3rd in the count on 121 votes.

Mitchell had an amazing year despite his teams decline after the premiership in 2008. He was able to poll in 21 of the 22 matches. In ten of his games he gathered over 30 disposals, hitting the 40 mark twice. The Midfielder now has a very impressive resume at the age of 26 having played 155 games, captain in a premiership season, 2 club best and fairest and the 2003 AFL rising star award.

The rise of younger gun Cyril Rioli cannot go unmentioned he finished second and missed 3 matches due to a hamstring injury. At the age of 20 years old he has placed 6th and now 2nd from only two seasons. While Lance Franklin managed to follow his 2008 award with a solid 3rd placing after much criticism throughout the 2009 season.
