Position: Key position player

Joel Houghton is a tall (194cm) player who can kick goals. He can kick bags and has a good set shot. Has good anticipation and Houghton is good at reading the play. He also works well at ground level for his height but isn’t spectacular. His current weight (82kg) might stop him playing in round one next year but with two pre-seasons in him he could be able to hold off the opposition. He often plays very well against weaker opponents but Houghton needs to work more on his ability to beat the better opponents and not to go missing. His consistency is therefore an issue.

Joel Houghton is a good over-head mark and likes to play on. He doesn’t kick with his left very much which makes me wonder if he can kick on his left. Houghton can play in the ruck a little bit and is passable in that position, but you wouldn’t want him to play their the whole game.

He apparently has very good aerobic ability and he does like to run and carry but his work ethic off the ball is questionable. Houghton Provides good leads and is capable of taking those marks. I haven’t seen him take many pack marks or overly contested marks, he seems to just win them by his height advantage and his superior reading of the flight.

Joel Houghton is being talked about as a round 3 selection in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft. I could see him going higher because of the lack of good key position players in this draft. I could see him going lower because of his care factor and low-ish weight.

I'm fiercely logical, opinionated and don't care too much for backlash. Luckily, I'm always right. Did I mention that I'm arrogant? I also support Melbourne; the most illogical thing I do. Oh... I'm contradictory as well.
