Andrew Swallow has won the Syd Barker Medal for the North Melbourne Best and Fairest. Swallow gathered 487 votes in the count to finish ten votes ahead of Scott Thompson and eleven clear of Brady Rawlings.
This is a huge turn around for the Midfielder who in 2008 could only manage 3 games due to persisting injuries. He was able to play all 22 matches in 2009 for North and was ranked 4th in the AFL for total tackles with 152 for the year. Showing his on going commitment he has signed a 2-year contract extension with the Club and will be hoping to continue to improve in 2010.
Scott Thompson who finished second in the best and fairest voting picked up the Jason McCartney Jumper for courage and commitment, the rookie of the year awards along with the Northerners award. The 23-year-old back man had his best year and was a key figure in the back 6 all season for the Roos.
Other Awards on the night went to Adam Simpson (Rennie Johnston cheer squad determination award), Ben Warren (Jack ‘Skull’ Castle trainers and staff encouragement award) and Shannon Watt Harold Henderson best clubman award. The night was also a testimonial to retiring club champion Adam Simpson who announced his retirement during the 2009 season.
