Position: Small Midfielder
Anton Woods is a really good ball getting player, whether it be in a contested situation or otherwise. Woods is pretty quick which enables him to get the loose ball gets and he is fantastic at getting the ball around the packs and at stoppages. The problem I see with Anton is that he often just throws the ball on the boot when he gets it in the clinches. I feel he should take half a second more to weigh up his options before thumping the ball forward.
Anton Woods had a great year playing in the TAC cup this year for the Northern Knights. He was awarded the Morrish Medal for the best player in the competition as well as the coaches award. It is only the third time in history a player has taken out both awards and shows Anton Woods’ capability at TAC cup level. He claimed votes in 10 of the 18 games he played and topped the voting in 6 of those games.
Woods, who is a Collingwood supporter is trying to shape his game on Leon Davis’ and Dane Swan’s playing style. Woods can take a contested mark even though his height should seemingly preclude it. Woods is a pretty tough player but doesn’t chase and tackle as much as you would expect a short quickish player to.
Anton Woods lead the TAC cup in clearances, contested possessions, hard ball gets and loose ball gets. At the Victoria draft screening camp he displayed his athletic ability with a 2.96sec 20m (top 20%) and level 14-8 beep test (top 11%). His height of just 170cm could stop him from going higher in the draft but with clubs on the lookout for exciting players in the Cyril Rioli mold he might make it in to early round 2.
