The Collingwood Football Club has announced that they have signed 24 year old American; Seamus McNamara onto a two year international rookie contract for 2010-2011.
McNamara sent Collingwood his ‘resume’, in what is reported to be in video format, in the hope of being trialled by the Magpies. At the time Collingwood’s Director of Sport’s Science David Buttifant was in the United States attending a conference and testing was able to be arranged in order to assess McNamara’s abilities.
Buttifant was pleased with his results, and Collingwood invited the American to Australia to attend a 14 turn 21 day trial to assess his skills, as he was easily able to pick up various aspects of the AFL while in Melbourne.
McNamara was trialled in Melbourne in September with the Magpies, who were so impressed with his skills they offered him a 2 year contract, which saw him return over last week to start pre-season training in the black and white.

He played four seasons (2004-2005 and 2007-2008) in Division 1, College Basketball for Marist University in New York. He then played one season of professional Basketball in Germany for TSV Dachau Spurs.
He is a strong and powerful athlete and Collingwood’s National Recruiting Manager Derek Hine has stated that he is “very driven and has impressed everyone at the club with his work ethic”. Hine added that McNamara could develop into a key forward or ruckman.
