Essendon’s vision for a Windy Hill Upgrade

VFL Rd 3 - Bombers v Sandringham

The Essendon Football Club is in the process of planning for a meeting to occur later this month, with the Federal Government in Canberra to attract funding for a state-of-the art high performance facility to be developed and constructed at the Windy Hill precinct.

If Essendon club representatives can secure funding for the vision they have for their new facilities, the plan would see Windy Hill Oval be re-developed to a size similar to Etihad Stadium or the MCG. The Bombers also plan to change the existing facilities at Windy Hill into a Community Centre, to maintain the depth of their existing programs and to also provide a base for the administrative Victorian Brand of the Australian Paralympic Committee.

With the new proposed upgrade two other sporting clubs would be affected by the plans. Essendon announced that they are willing to assist the clubs affected by the changes as both the Essendon Cricket Club and Essendon Bowls Club will need to relocate their facilities. The Essendon Cricket Club has already been in talks with the council and the Bombers to relocate to Fairbairn Park and the council is currently considering the move.

In the last 20 years the Essendon Football Club has invested more than $20 million into the existing facilities at Windy Hill. This includes the development of a commercial gym, fitness centre, refurbishments to the venue and the recent installation of an underground 800,000 litre water tank in a partnership with the Federal Government. If their current proposed upgrade gets the funding and the go ahead, the Bombers investments will rise even more and the club will be given the opportunity to be successful not only off the field but on the field.
