Nicky Price, 18, one of the Gold Coast Football Club’s first contracted players will be returning to Rugby Union after being delisted by the Gold Coast.
Both Gold Coast and Price have agreed to part ways in their initial three-year contractual agreement. Price grew up playing a variety of sports including; Cricket, Athletics, Rugby Union and AFL, but has decided that he will be turning all his focus onto Rugby Union and towards becoming a Wallaby.
Price stated that he has really enjoyed his time playing and training with the Gold Coast side “despite the frustration of recurring injuries” and said that “the AFL just isn’t for me at this stage”. He also added that he enjoys both AFL and Rugby, but feels that at an elite level he is more likely to receive a game quickly in Rugby.
In 2007 Price received an AFL Michael Voss Scholarship, to help prospective AFL players pursue their football careers. He also won a Mike Fitzpatrick AFL Scholarship, which was awarded by the AFL Players’ Association to help young footballers aged between 15 and 17 in their education and training.
In early October 2008, Nicky Price committed to the Gold Coast Football club, signing a three-year deal which would have hopefully see him play in the TAC Cup Completion in 2009, playing in the VFL in 2010 and in the AFL in 2011.
During the TAC Cup Competition in 2009, Price seemed to struggle injury and form wise and was only selecting in a few TAC Cup matches. Despite his talent, athleticism and extremely fast speed as a midfielder, it appeared as though Price was lost on the field and never could find his feet.
Gold Coast senior coach Guy McKenna stated that Price had endured a difficult year in 2009 mainly due to injury, and said that it seemed that Price’s decision to return to Rugby better suits his ambitions. McKenna said “we wish Nick well and hope he can achieve what he wants to in Rugby Union”.
