Position: Ruckman
Nathan Vardy is set to be one of the first picked ruckman in this years draft thanks to a great set of attributes that could lead him to become a quality AFL ruckman.
Nathan Vardy was measured at 198cm’s and 89kg’s at the draft camp which doesn’t seem entirely ideal for a ruckman, but the fact that he has a larger than normal arm-span and a good leap helps him in the centre square and around the ground.
Vardy’s agility, second efforts and his marking along with his log arms are his clear strengths. His marking in particular impressed me given that he times his leaps well which allows him to mark the ball at the highest point which makes it hard for defenders to spoil.
He’s not going to be a beanpole ruckman all of his career going by his frame which looks like one that can add weight on to it.
Despite the obvious upside of Vardy, he does have one glaring issue that holds him back.
To this date, Nathan Vardy has shown what he can do, but not consistently. Still; in an AFL environment, I’d back a quality club with good development coaches to get him performing consistently.
Look for him to be picked up late first round to mid-second round.
