Late Wednesday evening, the Collingwood Football Club announced on their website that defender Shannon Cox was retiring from AFL.
Cox during the off season realised that he no longer had the desire and hunger to commit to the high demand of AFL Football. He started pre-season training with the remainder of the Magpies group, ahead of the 2010 season last weekend and the club expected him to be on their playing list for next season. So, for the club his decision to quit football came as a surprise and Collingwood’s Chief of Football Geoff Walsh admitted this but added that the club will “respect his decision to retire and wish him well”.
Shannon Cox was drafted in the 2005 Rookie Draft as a 3rd round selection for Collingwood, from the WAFL club South Fremantle. At the end of following year (2006), the Magpies elevated Cox to the senior list and he played his debut match again Richmond in Round 3, at the MCG in 2007. During his debut year he played 8 matches and showed his abilities as a running defender. In 2008 he played 6 games in the senior side and the 16 remainder in the VFL. In 2009, Cox played 11 of the first 13 games for the Pies however spent the remainder of the season in the Pies VFL team.
Shannon Cox will end his career only at age 23, having played only 25 games for the Pies in 3 seasons and having kicked 6 goals.
