New St Kilda recruit Andrew Lovett has been suspended indefinitely by the club. The ex bomber is currently under police investigation after an alleged sexual assault that occurred in the early hours of last night.
The Saints are treating the allegations seriously and have said “At this time, the club has suspended Andrew Lovett indefinitely…Andrew will not be involved with the club in any shape or form until a further decision is made.”
The allegations follow a spate of incidents surrounding the football star through his career. Lovett only days after being traded to St Kilda was arrested for being drunk in a public place. The Saints were hoping that Lovett would turn a corner at his new home but now there are serious doubts on his playing future.
St Kilda’s chief executive Michael Nettlefold had this response when asked if he believed Lovett would play for the club “I would prefer not to answer that question -it’s not appropriate for me to answer that question.”
This incident tops off a horror public relations week for the Afl after the behaviour of many Carlton players during the week. This incident coupled with the news of Lovett will surely put the heat on the AFL to act on the behaviour of players at the elite level.
