Hawthorn’s finals aspirations stay alive for season 2010 after overcoming a strong finishing Sydney side at the MCG on Sunday afternoon to win their third consecutive match.

Hawthorn lead the match for the entire afternoon and looked like they were heading for their 4th win of the season. However the Swans came out strong in the final quarter and kicked 3 goals in a row after Lance Franklin’s early goal to reduce the margin to 2 points. The next 4 goals were divided evenly, but when Adam Goodes kicked the fourth of those goals in the 29th minute mark of the final term, the margin as just 1 point and was anyone’s game to win.

After a tightly contested four minutes of play and only 3 more behinds added to the scoreboard, Hawthorn was able to walk away winners by 2 points.

Key Players for Hawthorn

Sam Mitchell – The Hawks skipper was tagged by Swans co-captain Brett Kirk for the entire match and beat his man. He lifted his game in the final term when the game was in the balance and stood up as a captain. He finished with 22 possessions (10 contested), 9 tackles, 7 clearances and 2 inside 50s.

Cyril Rioli – Rioli played against the also fast running Rhyce Shaw and while he lost the possession count and efficiency to Shaw, he was able to be more influential in the outcome of the match. He had an outstanding final five or so minutes of the match, in which he helped set up two scoring shots for the Hawks. While both shots resulted in behinds, that was enough to give the Hawks the win. Rioli finished with 16 possessions (11 contested), 3 tackles and clearances.

Key Players for Sydney

Shane Mumford – The Swans big ruckman was the best player for his side and dominated his opponents. He amassed a massive 42 hit out, compared to his opponents Brent Renouf’s 16 and Wayde Skipper’s 6. He also had 17 possessions (13 contested), 6 tackles and clearances and 3 frees for.

Daniel Hannebery – Hannebery had yet another outstanding match for the Swans, and could be pushing hard for the Rising Star Award. He started strongly in the opening quarter and continued to be consistent for the remainder of the match and assisting the Swans in attack with his 3 goals. He finished with 25 possessions, 9 marks and 4 tackles.

Musings from the match

  • Hawthorns guernsey, was a special camouflage design as part of the Kokoda game.
  • The win is Hawthorn’s third consecutive win, and they are currently one win outside the Top 8.
  • Lance Franklin got reported once more this season or a high bump on Martin Mattner in the last quarter.
  • The report on Franklin, is the third time in 9 months, that he has been reported for a high hit/bump.
  • Campbell Brown came off the ground in the third term with a knee injury.
  • Adam Goodes finished the match with 1 goal and 5 behinds.
  • Hawthorn had 15 more inside 50’s than the Swans (55 – 40).

    Some promising signs for Sydney, the best players on the ground were the kids. Hannebery, Mumford, Rohan, Smith and white. Too bad Goodes could not kick straight……
