Sydney vs. Fremantle – Round 9 Match Review

Fremantle – 9.9 (63)

After a tumultuous week off the track for the Fremantle Football Club has let their football do the talking and ran away with a 37 point victory against the Swans. The Swans started the game well but had a shocking second term where they only managed 2 goals to the Dockers 6 and from that point on Fremantle were never headed.

The impressive thing for Fremantle is that this is another win on the road this year, something they have not been able to do in recent season or in that case every in their short history. Fremantle sit in third pace after this win and are one game clear. For Sydney this is another disappointing loss where key players just did not perform to the required standard.

Sydney now has some worries considering the recent form that has been shown. Injuries are becoming a massive concern and the fact key players are not using the ball well.

Key Players for Sydney

Gary Rohan – Even though he didn’t get a huge amount of the ball he had his best game for the club in his short career. 15 possessions, 6 tackles, 1 goal and 3 inside 50s. Impressive thing was the amount of contested possessions as he finished with 11 for the game. Let himself down a little with his disposal.

Nick Malceski – With the loss of Kenelly, Malceski really needed to have a good game and did. 28 possessions for the game at a 7% efficiency, not high but a lot better than many team mates. 3 tackles for the match and 7 inside 50s in a good display.

Kieran Jack – Super impressed with Jack who despite only having 17 disposals was very influential. Had 10 tackles, 4 clearances 5 inside 50s, 2 score assists and a goal.

Key Players for Fremantle

Matthew Pavlich – The Pav continues to impress in 2010 with another good performance. Kicked 3 goals and 4 behinds, 3 clearances, 5 inside 50s and 2 score assists. Always has an impact which is the best thing about Pavlich.

Nathan Fyfe– Had 23 disposals for the match and really showed he is a player for the future. Had 4 clearances, 5 tackles, 7 inside 50s and 12 of his possessions were contested. Another good find for the Dockers in 2010.

Michael Barlow – Only had 19 disposals but anyone who has 10 tackles deserves a mention for me. Along with this he also had 4 clearances, 3 inside 50s and 1 scoring assists. Another in the great find section of the Fremantle Football Club.

Musings from the Match

  • Last win Fremantle had at the SCG was in 1996, 14 years ago good signs for the Dockers.
  • Huge tackling numbers for both teams Sydney managed 81 but Fremantle not to be out done had 97 for the match.
  • Is it just me or are disposals getting worse? Both teams were below 70% Sydney at 68% and Fremantle at 63%.
  • The problem is that it is the Key players that are attributing to this. Another game I have seen where Adam Goodes went below 50% ws at 48% for the day. 6 clangers for the day.
  • In the age of high disposals it is good to see it is not a necessity Fremantle only had 284 disposals 76 less than Sydney.
  • Kennelly was a big loss for the Swans and had a clean sheet for the day. Zero stats.
  • Fremantle had 8 players below 10 disposals doesn’t happen too often especially when the team wins.
  • Sandilands was good in the ruck contests but didn’t really impact around the ground as many thought he might in this encounter.
  • Fremantle are a genuine finals prospect. Will de dangerous especially if the can secure a home final and keep winning away from home.
  • Sydney clearly have some work to do after this game.

Dunno about the low rate of efficiency with disposals in this game. I was at the ground, and both the heavy nature of the turf and the rain made it a difficult spectacle. When you add in the short length of the ground and the congestion that brings, it’s not a surprise to see low effectiveness in disposal rates.
