Tyson Edwards retires from the Adelaide Crows

Adelaide Crows veteran Tyson Edwards has announced his retirement today, effectively immediately. His announcement after 16 seasons of football means he will finish off his career with a total of 320 games and 190 goals at the age of 33.

Adelaide’s Chief Executive Officer Steven Trigg stated today that Edwards “has been one of the all-time greats of the AFL” and that the Adelaide Football Club has been extremely privileged to have him in the team. He added that he will be remembered for his strong impact on the club as a consistent, talented and durable player

Trigg praised Edwards further and said not only is he a fantastic player and one of the leagues all time best, but that he is a “much loved person” to many people at the football club.

Edwards has been one of the Crows important players over the years and his consistency, toughness and flexibility have been the characteristics which shaped his long career, and allowed him only to miss 3 matches between 1999 and 2008.
Many supporters believe he has been an underrated midfielder throughout his career. This can be illustrated by him not winning any AFL major awards including the Club Champion award for the Crows.

Edwards was recruited to the Adelaide Crows from the SANFL side West Adelaide in the 1995 Pre-Season Draft at pick number 21. He played his debut match in his first year at the club, in Round 11 2005 against the Western Bulldogs.

His achievements in his 16 years at the Crows are:

  • Member of the Crows 1997 and 1998 Premiership side.
  • Member of the International Rules team in 2002.
  • Finished third in the Club Champion (Best and Fairest) in 2004.
  • Finished runner up in the Club Champion in 2002, 2003 and 2006.
  • Finished in the top 10 Club Champion every year since 2000.

Tyson Edwards is the second Adelaide Crows veteran for the week to announce his retirement, joining captain Simon Goodwin who announced he will be retiring at the end of the season on Tuesday.

Edwards, will address the media at 9am tomorrow (Friday 28th May) morning from the Adelaide Football Club.
