Adelaide– 11.8 (74)
Geelong – 9.9 (63)
In a very scrappy encounter at AAMI stadium Adelaide has upset Geelong by 11 points and in doing so has kept their 2010 finals campaign alive. Adelaide won the contested ball and was able to use it more effectively going into the forward 50. Geelong looked good in the first quarter but Adelaide always looked in the contest.
It was some of the younger players for Adelaide that contributed to this win while for the Cats it looked as though they expected the match to just go their way but it didn’t. The Crows really won the midfield battle and was able to bottle the Cats up across the half forward line which made it difficult for them going into the 50m arc.
Key Players for Adelaide
Bernie Vince – Was exceptional through the middle of the ground having 32 disposals for the night. He was able to win the clearances having 5 and also put the ball inside 50 on 8 occasions. Also managed ten marks for the night.
Taylor Walker – Was the key forward on the night for the Crows ending with 4 goals 1 behind from his 15 disposals. Had 5 marks with 2 being contested and really unsettled the Geelong backline.
Scott Stevens – Was great down back for the Crows in both stopping and setting the match up. Had 23 disposals, 9 marks with 2 being contested and he was able to se the ball well whether it was by hand or foot.
Key Players for the Geelong
Harry Taylor – Very impressed with Harry Taylor and his performance tonight. Ended the match with 30 possessions, took 16 marks with 5 being contested and 10 contested possessions. Used the ball really well going at 87% effectiveness for the night.
Joel Selwood – Was one of the only Geelong midfielders who was on top at the final siren. 35 possessions, 8 clearances, 5 inside 50s and also one goal assist. Has been the Cats best midfielder over the past month.
Musings from the match
- Geelong started the game very well but past the first quarter were very sloppy going into attack.
- Adelaide won the clearance stat and also the inside 50 stat which does not happen very often.
- Adelaide pressured the Cats really well and won the contested possession count by 18 on the night.
- Surprisingly Geelong had more of the ball and used it better that the Crows statistically but going into the forward 50 Geelong lacked options.
- Ablett was incredibly well held only having 19 possessions for the game, had a good final term but couldn’t do enough to get the Cats back in it.
- Too many players tonight could not keep their feet; I am not sure whether it was the ground or boot selection but was bordering on ridiculous how many players fell over.
- Late in the final term Geelong mounted a late charge and looked to be right back in the game. A behind was given to the Cats as the umpire said it had hit the post. Replies would suggest that it should have been awarded a goal.
- 27 scoring shots for Adelaide compared to 18 from Geelong really showed the Crows dominance.
- Was not the greatest game to watch in all honesty, reminded me of the Geelong vs. St Kilda game a few weeks ago.
- It will be interesting to see how Hawthorn play against Brisbane this week as Geelong looked to be running on the spot and tired on many occasions.
- Jeff Allen a Geelong trainer collapsed before the game which was worrying for the club. We wish him all the best and hope for a speedy recovery.
- Adelaide are still alive in 2010 make no doubts about that.
SuperCoach Points – Highs & Lows
Not a high possession game and also not a high scoring game with only 7 players scoring above 100 points. For the Crows Vince (113) was outstanding, Johncock (111), Stevens (111) and Van Berlo (101) were the best scoring.
For Geelong Selwood (144) had another impressive performance is always consistent, Taylor (134) was exceptional in the backline while Kelly (109) also tried hard.
A few disappointing scores especially from the Cats, Mark Blake (3) was near invisible, Hogan (23), Bartel (70), Ablett (76) again did not score well and Chapman (97) was below par.
Kurt Tippet (23) was well held by the Cat defenders, Mcleod (47) and Symes (34) were the only players who really performed well under their season averages.

“In a very scrappy encounter at AAMI stadium Adelaide has upset Geelong by 9 points …”
74 – 63 = 11, not 9. Easy mistake to make though.
