Tonight at the Gold Coast Football Club’s ‘Rise Up’ celebration dinner, the club revealed its inaugural Guernsey , nickname and theme song.
Last week the AFL’s Chief Executive Andrew Demetriou confirmed that Gold Coast had shortlisted a handful of potential nicknames which it would choose for in the coming weeks.
Gold Coast’s official nickname is “Suns” and club Chief Executive Travis Auld said that selecting a team nickname was a difficult decision because almost 100 names had come up. He added however that when the name “Suns” was suggested it was “just so damn obvious”. He added that it represents the clubs values; relentless, dependable, community, bold and fresh and also is the reason why people travel to the Gold Coast.
The Gold Coast Suns home guernsey is similar to the one worn by their VFL team this season. It is primarily red in colour and has yellow/gold panels down the left and right sides. Their away guernsey is predominately white with a blue trim and a blue wave.
The clubs theme song was based on a submission in bid process, where Ross Arundale wrote the original lyrics and recorded a demo version. Players, staff and musician Greg Champion provided suggestions to the original submission and the final official song has the same tune produced by Arundale, but some changed lyrics.
Gold Coast Suns Theme Song
We are the suns of the Gold Coast sky
We are the one in the red, gold and blue
We are the mighty Gold Coast Suns
We play to win the flag for you
Fight! Fight! Fight! Till we hold up the cup
Run, run, run all the way
We are the suns of the Gold Coast sky
We’re the team who never say die!
