Port Adelaide veteran Josh Carr announced today that the Showdown match between Port Adelaide and Adelaide will be the last match of his career.
Carr said that when he was younger playing AFL was all he ever thought about, and “to be given an opportunity to play for a great traditional club like Port Adelaide was simply unbelievable”.
He said that he will always cherish the Powers era of success which included their premiership win in 2004 which “was amazing” to be a part of.
Port’s “caretaker” coach Matthew Primus who also played for the club alongside Carr said that Carr was one of his favorite teammates. He stated that it was quite “extraordinary that he could get so much out of his body through his attitude and just sheer will-power”.
In Port Adelaide’s Round 15 encounter with Collingwood, Josh Carr was brought into the side, via the AFL’s approval after not being named emergency. This match was also Mark Williams’ last match as coach and speculation mounted that it would be Carr’s final match as well as Williams’.
Josh Carr was recruited by Port Adelaide in the 1998 National Draft in the first round selection at pick number 7 and played 105 games. At the conclusion of the 2004 season he was traded to Fremantle via the NAB AFL Draft where he played 83 games. He was then traded back to Port Adelaide via the 2008 NAB AFL Pre-season draft in the first round selection as pick number 2. He played his debut match in 2008 against Melbourne at the MCG.
Carr was well known for his hard work and versatility and his ability to play as a run with player or an inside midfielder. He usually caused much damage with his ball winning skills and slick hands.
During his time at Fremantle he was appointed vice captain for the 2007 and 2008 seasons and was awarded the Glendinning Medal for the Western Derby in 2007.
At Port Adelaide he won the best team man award in 2001 and was runner up in Port’s best and fairest. In 2001 and 2002 he was part of the Power’s pre-season premiership team and then in 2004 was appointed vice captain alongside Warren Tredrea, which was the same year he was a member of Port Adelaide’s only AFL Premiership side.
Josh Carr will finish his career spanning 12 years having played a total of 207 games (124 with Port Adelaide and 83 with Fremantle) and having kicked just over 100 goals.
