Last night at the 2011 Australian Football Leagues Coaches Awards (AFLCA), the winners for each of the following categories were officially announced:

  • Coach of the Year
  • Player of the Year

Coach of the Year: West Coast Coach John Worsfold won the Coach of the Year Award, after leading his side to 17 wins and 5 losses for season 2011. It was one of the biggest turnarounds in recent times with the Eagles going from a wooden spoon finish in 2010 to finishing in fourth position this year, losing in the Preliminary Finals.

Player of the Year: Carlton midfielder Marc Murphy was awarded the Player of the Year Award. He finished on top of the leader board with 94 votes, just ahead of his skipper Chris Judd (90 votes) and Sam Mitchell and Matthew Boyd (87 votes).

This award is Murphy’s second individual honour for the season, following last weeks selection into the All Australian team. He played all 22 games for the Blues this year averaging 29 disposals (16.2 kicks and 12.9 handballs) per match.

Young Player of the Year: Fremantle’s Nathan Fyfe won the AFLCA Young Player of the Year, the second consecutive Dockers player to win the award.
