Growing up in Melbourne, my best mate and his family were mad Richmond supporters. Having gone to a lot of Tigers games I, like a lot of people, developed a fondness for them, watching players like Matthew Richardson and Wayne Campbell who were shining lights in what was a dark period for the proud Richmond Football Club. People constantly talk of a longer season, but perhaps we are all missing the obvious, why not shorten seasons? There would be many benefits to shortening the AFL season. By making the season shorter there would be a fairer fixture, more exciting games and less dead rubbers. (more…)

As we all know the AFL Players Association (AFLPA) has recently been pushing for a pay rise from the AFL to a fixed 25 – 27% of the game’s total revenue. The AFL is refusing to give the players this fixed percentage of the game’s revenue instead attempting to negotiate a smaller pay rise. The players argue that given the game’s skyrocketing profits, the players should be sharing in them. The players’ demands are unreasonable and the reason for the game’s higher revenue is not due to them at all but rather due to the AFL’s administration and expansion.
Currently the total player payments across the AFL is capped under the previous Collective Bargaining Agreement. It sets aside a pool of money for the players to share in. This amount has been steadily increasing over the past 5 years. In 2009 the players shared in a total of $143 million giving an average amount of $221,482 to each player. In 2010 a 3% increase in the pool took the amount to $7.95 million per club. (more…)

The revelation of the Collingwood betting scandal has raised many questions about betting in the AFL.
Firstly, it seems almost fluky that the AFL managed to detect this betting. A total of around $150 was wagered, and in the grand scheme of things, that is a tiny amount. Unless the AFL knows all of Nick Maxwell’s family members and their betting accounts, it would seem that this would have to have been the result of a tipoff. If this is the case, how can the AFL possibly be detecting $10 here and there in cash bets? It is nearly impossible to track and there is no sure way that the AFL can know the players are not betting on the game. With the number of players and officials who are privy to insider information it is nearly impossible to try and track them all. The temptation for these people is too great. (more…)

In 2010, everyone knew David Swallow and Harley Bennell would be picked one and two but there was a lot of debate as to who would go first. History records Swallow as the number one prospect in the land at the time, with all the perks and burdens that come with such a tag. This year many expect a similar situation with Jonathan Patton, Stephen Coniglio and Chad Wingard. (more…)

A 20-year-old female’s perspective on the physicality of today’s game.
I have followed football with a passionate interest ever since I was born. Having my father Robert be associated with such clubs as Fitzroy, Adelaide, Fremantle and my favourite Bomber boys, one of my first ever memories as a child was being taught how to hold a football correctly in order to kick a torpedo.
I was fortunate enough to be involved with the Essendon Football Club for a period of eight years. This not only gave me a good understanding of the game, but also the character of, and respect for, the Essendon players and community. Certainly at Essendon it was never a case of ‘who is the girl?’ Maybe other clubs are the same. Perhaps they are not. (more…)
