The Team

Luke Wieselmann

Things I love about football: The strategies and counter strategies that are employed to win a game. It is rarely individual performances that win your team the game. It truly is a team sport and when you are watching, you are part of that team.

Things I hate about football: The way that the AFL thinks that as soon as there is a new strategy that it is going to ruin the game and tries to make a rule to stop it, which makes the problem worse.

James Rose

University student, currently studying at Deakin, footy obsessed, love technology and good looking*.
*debatable

Things I love about football: The heart in mouth moments, big marks, miracle goals, heavy hits and close games. I love the match-ups and how much thought goes into them. Blind faith in your teams chances.

Things I hate about football: Rule changes, removed physicality and the lack of one on one duels that last all game.

Vishan Jayasighe

Things I love about football: Collingwoods draw – year after year, contests, players running with the flight of the ball, finals footy, seeing fans getting so cut up about their player not getting a Rising Star Nomination.

Things I hate about football: The ever increasing rule changes that seem to be designed in an effort to stop defenders defending, the supporters from the 15 other clubs, NAB Cup in all it’s glory.

Ben Fullerton

Things I love about football: Its not soccer, hard tackles, flying marks, fast movement of the ball (its just exciting).

Things I hate about football: Constant rule changes leading to different interpretations of such rules, the game is getting softer.

Cladi
Things I love about football: COLLINGWOOD! Big marks, fast running through the midfield to set up goals, amazing ‘fluke’ goals, the atmosphere when attending a game.

Things I hate about football: Umpires, and how they dictate the game too often….that is all…Oh and the constant changing of rules, arrogant supporters and supporters who leave the game when it’s not complete.

Contributors

Jonathon Blackman

What I love?
Crunching hip and shoulders. Butterflies before the siren sounds to begin a finals match. The ecstasy of a comeback win. That football is the great leveler between all supporters whatever their creed or status.

What I hate?
The depression of giving up large leads. Tanking. The mythical concept of the big 4. Football supporters with less than 4 teeth. Journo’s who make captain obvious statements a la Mike ‘top 50 king’ Sheehan and Mark ‘cant string 2 intelligent words together’ Robinson.

Lucas Blatman

Things I love about football: Can watch anygame, anytime and get something out of it, the competitivness, the pressure, I can’t wait for the weekend to watch it all over again!

Things I hate about football: The game trying to rule out all the things that make it a true hard contact sport.

Just to clear something up

What happened to ContestedFooty?

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

So, some of our more regular readers would have noticed that in the last couple of days ContestedFooty has reverted back to some of its more old school layouts. Many of you are probably wondering what happened to our awesome banner and the photos we would display at the top of articles. Let us explain.

At 11:43am on Wednesday April 29, 2009, ContestedFooty received an email from an AFL Legal representative saying that the AFL owns registered trademarks for the term “AFL” and all AFL club names, including nicknames. It then went on to say that it also owned the rights to intellectual property such as images from AFL matches and events, including any photo of a player in a team guernsey. The email continued to state that ContestedFooty was giving the impression that we were affiliated with the AFL, further stating this was incorrect. It was then demanded that ContestedFooty remove all content that qualifies under these conditions.

As such we at ContestedFooty decided it was prudent to remove all images containing players or logos related to the AFL or any AFL club. Unfortunately for us that included our brand spanking new banner. We also decided to remove the term AFL from headings, and tags wherever it was possible. We have added a paragraph to the start of our “About Us”, “Privacy” and “Terms and Conditions” pages clarifying that ContestedFooty is in no way, shape or form affiliated with the AFL.

The final demand according to the email was that we do not refer to AFL teams by their names and/or nicknames. If we were to do this we would be unable to continue running our website.
Explain to us how a website that is designed to talk about footy and issues around footy be able to share the writers thoughts on footy if it is not allowed to even mention the code being played or the teams that are playing? We understand the concerns the AFL has about the use of photos and logos but we believe they are being a tad heavy handed by saying we cannot even name the teams we support.

We at ContestedFooty are simply footy fanatics who wished to share ideas with fellow footy fanatics. We do not believe that we are doing anything to harm the AFL or its reputation. If anything we believe we are helping to promote the code that is trying so hard to spread its influence across Australia.

A Brief History of ContestedFooty

ContestedFooty began back in 2008 when a group of six footy mad university students, with too much spare time on their hands, were discussing the lack of AFL fan sites/blogs on the internet when compared with major sports overseas. Instead of forgetting that conversation and heading back to the bar, a bright spark in the group suggested they do something about it and with that ContestedFooty was born.

At first the site was a true blog in that anything and everything was written about with very little structure, for some unknown reason though the site developed a bit of a following.

This following was flattering and motivated the group to improve the site as much as possible. This landed ContestedFooty in some trouble when some photo’s taken by our contributors attracted some unwanted attention from the AFL.

At this point the existence of ContestedFooty at all was in question as the AFL was of the belief the site was infringing on their trademarks. After some media attention (Full details here) and e-mail correspondence with the AFL, ContestedFooty was allowed to continue operating.

Note: We are passionate AFL fans at ContestedFooty and thank them for their understanding and their new approach to AFL Fan Blogs and Social Media in general.

Over the years ContestedFooty has covered a wide range of topics including but not limited to Match Reviews, Previews, Live coverage of games, SuperCoach Advice, Betting Tips, News, Draft Profiles and opinion pieces.

ContestedFooty Now

After taking some time off this year, the ContestedFooty team is glad to be back. We will still be covering a bit of everything- in true blog fashion. Our main focus however is to become your number one source for all things AFL Draft related as well as all the big AFL news as it happens.
