Key SuperCoach players for round 21 – Finals edition

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Prelim’s this week and it’s (hopefully) your chance to make the Grand Final!
Good luck to all still competing.

Bargains

Jobe Watson
The $477 300 valued midfielder was amazing last week against the Saints and as a result scored big with a total of 196pt’s
His dodgy ankle is obviously not bothering him so much going by his 3-week average of 135pt’s.
With Essendon’s injury issues and the leadership he has recently shown, expect him to excel from here onwards.

Scott Stevens
With the news of Nathan Bock being out for the year, people with Scott Stevens will rejoice.
He basically has to fill his role as the link man in defence, a role that he did really well against Hawthorn. He won’t score massively (he scored 107pt’s last week), but he is cheap at $373 500.

Travis Cloke
Whilst he hasn’t been peppering the scoreboard, he is most definitely getting his hands on the ball as showing with his 4-week average of 113pt’s. You probably would have missed him at his cheapest when he was below $300 000 (he’s now at $434 600), but when you are in form, you are in form.

Must have’s for the finals

Shannon Hurn
With high-scoring defenders not being so plentiful in SuperCoach, when one is in form, you need to take notice.
A 3-week average of 120pt’s, with his team in form and a price of $478 300 is a pretty good get.
If you’ve got him already, you are doing very well.

Cory Enright
Another defender who is in very good scoring form with a 5-week average of 110pt’s.
To say he’s stepped up with the injuries to their backline is an understatement.
He’s not cheap at $532 900, but he’s sure worth it!

Marc Murphy
Mr. Consistency all year long. How I marvel at it. His lowest score for the year is 98pt’s!
He’s a definite must have and given his high average of 115pt’s for the year, he’s not that expensive for his price of $554 400.

Must get rid’

Patrick Ryder
For obvious reasons given than he looks like he not going to be back for a little while with a knee injury.

Paul Medhurst
Is nowhere near his All-Australian form of last year at the moment with a pathetic average of 50pt’s since coming back from an ankle injury in round 13. He’s playing at his current price of $247 900 after starting the year valued at $473 800.

Scott Thompson
The Adelaide midfielder is really out of (scoring) form at the moment which has led to his price to drop down to $390 200 after only averaging 76pt’s since round 15,
Given that his type of play is made for the game, he’s been a massive disappointment; especially he averaged 110pt’s between round 10 and 14.

Ryan Griffin
He will struggle to get back after injuring his hamstring. Especially disappointing given that he was scoring pretty well.

Previous players revisited
All bargains’ from last week apart from Chris Judd (97pt’s for the Carlton captain) scored 100+. That has to be a first for me. Huzzah!
Dane Swan is a freak. Averaging 142pt’s since round 10…………

How They Played – Milestone games in round 20

Monday, August 17th, 2009

A look at how last week’s milestone players went in their respective games.

Adam Goodes – Playing in his 250th he showed that he still has the “Goodes”. He gathered 21 disposals at 71 % effectivness to go along with his 2 goals, 12 marks and 6 inside 50s. Not a bad day out in a losing side.

Scott Welsh – Welsh played in his 200th against the Brisbane Lions and got the result everyone looks for in their milestone. Contributed well to his sides win with 12 disposals, all of them kicks, 7 marks and 2.0.

Josh Carr – Only managed one tackle before he injured his ankle in the first quarter. Not a great finish to his 200th.

Leigh Brown – Had a quietish game but when your team is dominating its hard to rack up the stats in defence. He collected 12 disposals at 92% effectivness on Jack Reiwoldt, who also got 12 possessions.

Nathan Eagleton – Eagleton played his 200th game with the Bulldogs and was instrumental in their victory against the Lions. He collected 21 disposals, 16 of those were kicks, kicked 3.1 and had 8 inside 50s. Not a bad milestone game if you ask me.

Jordan Lewis – Played his 100th game and started the game on fire but slowed down as it progressed.Gathered 33 disposals, at 82% effectivness, kicked 1.1, got 7 clearances, and 11 of his possessions were contested.

Matthew Maguire – Did not play. I will revisit him when he finally makes the milestone.

Round 20 answers

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

The competition got a little bit more even this week with the previously unbeaten Saint’s finally losing against an excellent Essendon outfit and the likes of Collingwood and Carlton continuing to improve.

Here are this week’s answers from round 20′s games.

Adelaide vs. Hawthorn

match review
Can the Hawks regain some respect after a disappointing loss last week?
They started with a bang and it looked like they were going to but after Adelaide got their Zone’ going then they Hawks had no answers and over-possessed the ball.
The ladder doesn’t lie.
How will the Hawks forward line cope without Jarryd Roughead?
He would have been handy but given the form he was in, I’m dubious about the impact that he would have had.
How will Trent Hentschel go after his fist game since round 2?
Very good game finishing with 4 goals. From memory, they were all different types of goals which is the most promising thing.
What will this game tell us about these two teams?
The Hawks went in a team with nearly half the amount of experience than Adelaide and it showed.
Adelaide always bounces back well.
Can Brad Symes back up an excellent performance from last week?
He was average to good but no where near as good as last week where he was in the bests’ for Adelaide.
How will Hawks fan favourite Shane Savage and Adelaide youngster Rory Sloane perform in their debut game?
Both were promising without doing much. Savage should hopefully get some more games given that the Hawks have little to play for but I’d be surprised if Sloan (who is fearless) gets retained.

Richmond vs. Collingwood
match review
How will Richmond send off Joel Bowden in his last game?
Disappointingly. At least they didn’t allow the margin to exceed 100+ points.
It would have been funny to see him to go in for the melee ‘Lynch’ style in his last game!
Will the team respond to the stern words of Jade Rawlings who attacked the culture of the club after last week?
They did exactly what he criticized them for doing last week. When it got too hard; they gave up.
Will Richmond continue their good record against Collingwood?
No. Although their rivalry has been revitalised somewhat!
Will we see a Ben Cousins playing like a man possessed after being snubbed by Collingwood?
No. Although with the junk around him apart from Deledio and Chris Newman, he couldn’t do much.
Can Collingwood show that they are the 2nd best team in the comp right now by beating a (likely) determined Richmond outfit?
Dare I say it……..Yes…………
Will Cameron Wood be able to back-up his best game of his career with another good performance?
Another good game from him with 20 possessions and 19 hitouts. It will be interesting to see how he goes against Darren Jolly who monstered him only 8 rounds ago.

West Coast vs. North Melbourne
match review
Will this just be an ugly forgettable game as expected?
Yeah. Especially for North fans.
Will West Coast ‘drop the ball’ after an excellent game last week?
Carried it on’, and now they might finish in 9th!
Unbelievable.
Can Lachie Hansen show more form after a promising effort up forward?
He was in good marking form but still has a long way to go. I’d just bite the bullet and play him in his best spot; CHB.
Can Todd Goldstein and Josh Kennedy back up very good games from last week?
Goldstein, not really but his inexperience is an excuse.
Kennedy was the same.
Will Andrew Embley do the same after an awesome game last week?
‘Not as good but still damn good nonetheless.
Is he uncontracted or something?
Will Mark LeCras continue to show that he can be a very good midfielder as well as a dangerous forward?
Not so much by this game, but who cares? He’s shown as much that he can in the previous weeks anyway.
I’d go as far as to say that he can be a top-20 player if he plays more time in the midfield along with spurts up forward.

Brisbane vs. Western Bulldogs
match review
Can both teams bounce-back after a poor few weeks?
Both teams didn’t do too badly although the Bulldogs are definitely a class above Brisbane at this stage.
Are the Bulldogs over-loading their training for the finals?
Well it’s a bit interesting given that they nearly fell over in the last quarter which is a tell-tail sign of over-loading. I’d say yes; and so will Higgins and Akermanis!
How will Brian Lake perform on Jonathan Brown who has been in excellent marking form for a while now?
Call it even? 3 goals straight from Brown to 13 marks from Lake.
Will Tom Williams show that he deserves to be in the team with a good performance? Or continue to struggle?
No. You know, with his broken foot and all. He impressively played on.
How will the important ins’ of Robert Murphy, Liam Picken and Scott Welsh impact on the Bulldogs fortunes?
Robert Murphy was very, very good, Picken was handy and Welsh was okay.
How much will the loss of Daniel Cross hurt the Bulldogs chances of winning?
Not by much.
How will Travis Johnstone perform in what is most likely his last chance to save his career?
He was actually okay and probably did enough to regain his spot. He lives on!

Sydney vs. Geelong
match review
Can Sydney continue their late charge to the finals with a win against Geelong?
So close but so far……..again! If you add 8 points to their current standing (from the Saints loss), they would be in the 8’ right now, 2 points ahead of Essendon.
Can the Cats prove that they are up there with the Saints with a dominant performance against Sydney?
No. Not to me at least. They played in spurts whilst letting Sydney back into the game numerous amounts of times; this is after Mark Thompson issued some fighting words last week.
Will Steve Johnson bounce back after a particularly bad game last week?
If you saw the images before the game where he couldn’t move freely, you can see why he has struggled since he has been back. He was pretty good this week though.
The needle is his best friend from here till the end of their season!
Can Mark Blake prove that he deserves to be in the squad in the finals?
He was better than Mumford, but his lack of intensity around the ground is still an issue for Geelong.
A 70% Ottens will be an absolute godsend in their attempt for the flag.
Can Jesse White show that he is a viable forward option by performing against Scarlett/Taylor?
Yep, although in the games I’ve seen him up forward, he is better on the lead which is surprising given his body size. Scarlett beat him; but there is no shame it that.
How will the ins’ of Harry Taylor and Matthew Scarlett impact on Geelong?
They would have been in big trouble without those two. Goodes especially would have run riot.
How will Leo Barry go in his first game of the year?
‘Nothing special with a few good marks added in there. He’ll be better for the run.
Can Gary Ablett improve on his ineffective performance last week against Carlton?
Yep. 44 damaging possessions. Stood up when the game needed to be won. Brilliant stuff.

Fremantle vs. Melbourne
match review
Will this be just a game of two teams that will go for broke considering that there is nothing but pride on offer?
Melbourne definitely went for broke going by their interchange numbers (100+ after only averaging around 50 before this week).
Will team will show to have the best youngsters going by this game?
‘Melbourne going by this game. This was Freo’s worst effort for some time which didn’t help the inexperienced types to show off their abilities.
If Russell Robertson gets a game (named on the extended bench), will he show that he deserves another year after allegedly being told that he won’t be getting another contract at the Demons?
Going by that performance; maybe he does? 3 goals whilst taking the best defender. That could be handy considering that one of Watts or Jurrah will have to take the best defender if he isn’t there next year.
Will Chris Mayne continue to impress?
‘Tried hard but couldn’t do much unfortunately.

Port Adelaide vs. Carlton

match review
Can Carlton continue their good recent record against Port Adelaide?
Yep. Remember that the next time you tip or bet when they play again!
Can they also maintain their excellent intensity that was on display against Geelong?
Yes. The impact of Richard Hadley’s grunt work in that midfield has been the catalyst for me.
By him doing that, Gibbs, Judd or Murphy has a lot more freedom to do damage with the second possession.
Will Port be able to claim the last spot in the 8’ after losing a golden chance last week?
No. It’s fair to say that they won’t be playing the finals this year.
How will the Cornes/Fev’ tiff play out?
‘A little push and shove’ with an excellent courageous mark from Cornes, and a brilliant run-down tackle on him by Fev’.
Will it be Robbie Gray and Shaun Burgoyne flying the flag for Port by themselves once again?
Robbie Gray, for his excellent efforts with the ball was terrible without the ball. Shaun Burgoyne is doing brilliantly though.
Can Kade “yo yo” Simpson back up an exceptional game from last week?
He was pretty good. 19 possessions and 3 assists as well. His hard running was very good.

Essendon vs. St Kilda
match review
Will Essendon be able to at least match their last showing against the Saints earlier in the year when their pace caused troubles?
Yes. Essendon were absolutely brilliant.
With only one fit player on their bench and with Ryder, Fletcher and Dempsey (who was hurting the Saint’s) as the players that were injured; this was an unbelievable result.
Is this just another easy one for the Saints on their way for 22-0?
It’s never going to be an easy game for the Saint’s when when they come up against pace by the looks of it.
After the way Geelong have performed after they rested a large amount of players, it should be interesting to see if the Saints drop off or pick it up. Although given that they are playing North this week, we probably won’t know the true answer!
How will the amazing ins’ of Gilbert, Fisher, Goddard, Hayes, Dal Santo, Montagna and Riewoldt perform after a nice ol’ week off?
Goddard was the disappointing one. His last quarter was good though. The others were all pretty good, and Reiwoldts miss? He’s won 10 times more games that he has lost for them so I can’t see as real reason to bag him personally. If it was a final however………..
Can Mark McVeigh (originally written as Andrew Welsh in the original questions when I meant McVeigh) improve on his poor performances before he was given a rest due to his injuries?
‘Ball usage was still poor, but his attack on the ball was excellent. ‘Almost turned the corner.
Will Adam Schneider be able improve from an excellent game last week?
‘Kicked 3 goals, but was no where near as good as last week.

Essendon vs. St Kilda- Round 20 match review

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Essendon – 16.14 (110)
St Kilda – 16.12 (108)

Essendon held off a fast finishing St Kilda side to be the first team to genuinely put their hand up for the eighth position on the ladder. In doing so they also ended St Kilda’s impressive run of wins and although the four points are insignifigant in the context of the St Kilda season, there is no doubting they would have preffered to remain un-beaten.

Big moment
At the 29 minute mark of the first quarter Essendon were 2 goals down and St Kilda looked to be in cruise control. Enter Dustin Fletcher. Fletcher unloaded with what looked like a 70 meter plus kick to me which bounced in the goal square and went through for a goal, it was the moment you knew the Dons were prepared to take risks and weren’t going to die wondering.

Key players for Essendon

Jobe Watson – Continually won the ball at stoppages and proved to be a real head ache for St Kilda early. Watson had 37 disposals (15 contested and 6 clearances), 8 tackles and a goal by games end.

Angus Monfries– Really damaging when Essendon set up their match winning lead, wasn’t paid enough respect and he punished St Kilda with 4 goals and 20 touches.

Michael Hurley – Hit contests hard and looks to be coming along nicely for Essendon, kicked a goal before moving back to cover for Fletcher and showed clean hands all game finishing with 10 marks and 20 touches.

Key players for St Kilda

Nick Dal Santo – Really put to bed any doubts about his work rate for mine as he ran hard to firstly keep St Kilda in the game and then to try and win it. 27 disposals, 7 tackles and a goal were fair reward for effort.

Leigh Montagna – The other St Kilda midfielder who really worked hard all game, Montagna had an impressive 9 tackles and accumulated 25 disposals along the way.

Justin Koschitzke – ‘Kosi’ was defiately switched on for this game and with a bit more/improved supply looked likely to make the difference, ran harder than I have ever seen him run, marked the ball cleanly and kicked 3 goals in an impressive performance.

Musings from the match

• Essendon have their destiny in their own hands after this win, but with the injuries they accumulated to Fletcher, Dempsey, Ryder and Stanton will it matter.
• St Kilda would have learnt more from this loss than they would have had Nick Riewoldt stole the game after the siren.
• St Kilda’s backline is too tall.
• Lovett-Murray was very foolish giving away that free kick- the umpire went up to the players and warned them before the previous goal.
• The umpiring was inconsistant without effecting the result.
• Lenny Hayes went off in the first quarter into the rooms to get his arm looked at. (looked like and elbow problem)
• Dawson, Hudghton, Blake, Clarke, Dempster and Armitage are all potential candidates to lose their spot in the St Kilda team next week.
• St Kilda looked lethargic for most of the game, it wasn’t until the last quarter that they showed any real urgancy.
• Jobe Watson is a gun.

SuperCoach news

Jobe Watson is a gun. Jobe Watson is a gun. Jobe Watson is a gun. 196 SuperCoach Points for Jobe in one of his most influential performances yet for mine. He was joined by 4 of his mates for 100+ scores with Monfries 154 points being the other notable score.

Only Montagna and Dal Santo could crack the 100 point barrier for the Saints with scores of 148 and 122 respectively.

Port Adelaide vs. Carlton – Round 20 match review

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Port Adelaide – 9.13 (67)
Carlton – 18.13 (121)

Carlton carried their form from last week to seriously damage Port Adelaide’s meek finals ambitions. It was their dominant last term that was the most impressive thing about the Blues, where they kicked 9 goals to 1 when it looked like Port was coming at the start of the 4th quarter.

Big moment

5 minutes into the last quarter, it looked like Carlton were ready to blow the game apart and Andrew Carrazzo provided the moment to get it started with an excellent goal on the run in the forward pocket.

Key players for Port Adelaide

Dean Brogan – Showed his passion all day long and along with a few others, provided consistent efforts for the entire 4 quarters. Did well in the ruck with 28 hitouts.

Shaun Burgoyne – Continued his excellent form with 25 possessions and 9 clearances. Tried, tried and tried again.

Matt Thomas – Shared a job on Chris Judd with Kane Cornes and did a really good job helping in restricting the Carlton skipper to 19 possessions whilst getting 22 himself. Never gave up unlike many of his teammates.

Key players for Carlton

Marc Murphy – Was without an opponent for most of the game and made Port pay with 3 goals and 33 possessions. Excellent game from a player in excellent form.

Brryce Gibbs – Help set up the good lead in the 2nd quarter when he dominated. Finished with 32 possessions and 7 inside 50s.

Brendan Fevola – You can’t expect anything else than a bag’ from him when he gets delivery like that. A nice consistent performance from him which resulted with 6 goals.

Musings from the match

• This and the previous game show’s just how important it is for Carlton’s midfield to keep up its work-rate for the team to play good football.
• Could Richard Hadley be the difference? His grunt work was a feature allowing the classier players to do their thing’ more freely.
• Andrew Walker played his best game since coming back from his injury troubles. Great news for Carlton fans given his ability.
• Brett Thornton was very good (again) as the ‘general’ in the Carlton’s backline. He had an underrated year, that’s for sure.
• Careers over for Peter Burgoyne and Brendan Lade?
• Trade time for Salopek and Pearce? Salopek in particular looks uninterested.
• Port were listed as a year older than Carlton………..
• 13 goals (out of 18) from marks for Carlton is disgraceful from Port. Bad coaching and poor pressure from the midfield.
• The 10 extra clearances and 37 extra hitouts that Port had didn’t seem to help too much.

SuperCoach news

Carlton had a massive SuperCoach points total of 1938pt’s or an average of 88pt’s per player.
8 players scored 110+ with Murphy scoring the highest with 138pt’s.
Chad Cornes was the highest scorer for Port with 120pt’s with Matt Thomas (108pt’s) and Shaun Burgoyne (104pt’s) the only others to score over 100pt’s.

Melbourne vs Fremantle – Round 20 match review

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

AFL 2nd Semi-Final - Fremantle v Melbourne
Melbourne – 20.7 (127)
Fremantle – 9.10 (64)

A straight kicking Melbourne made short work of a travelling Fremantle outfit after quarter time. The weather looked like it wasn’t going to hold up but eventually the sun came out and the Demons stamped their authority on the game. The Dees were simply first to the ball and used it better than they have been of late. Fremantle’s midfield struggled against the Dees, somewhat surprisingly. Let the talk of Melbourne’s tanking in the Richmond game rain on.

Big Moment

When the umpires paid the first free kick in the game to Melbourne at the 9 min mark of the 2nd quarter. At that stage Fremantle had acquired 7 frees.

Key Players for Melbourne

Aaron Davey – Best on ground, was poorly tagged, ran freely in the midfield at some stages to my amazement. Some great one twos between him and others, including the Jurrahcane. 31 touches, 5 tackles, 2 goals.

Matthew Bate – Tackled well today, had 5 of them. 8 marks, especially on good leads to dangerous positions often. 25 possessions, some of which came when the game was well and truly over.

Key Players for Fremantle

Aaron Sandilands – The king of taking it out of the ruck apparently, he did that a lot today to fairly good effect, he had 33 hitouts. You can see him thinking hard when he has the ball though.

Matthew Pavlich – 25 touches, most of which were effective, he was pushed up the ground though so he wasn’t troubling the scorers. Pav’ was tagged by Dunn.

Musings from the match
• Kick on the ‘G was hilarious. A guy was running to be first to the centre square and then slipped once he got to the rope a fell flat on his rear end at full speed to rapturous laughter from the crowd.
• I did try to get to the square first too and came 3rd on my side of the ground at least. I was moderately impressed because I was wearing dress shoes with little to no traction. I spent most of the time trying not to fall over. I must remember my boots next year.
• On the weather issue; it cleared up beautifully in the end and it was sunny outside so that the home supporters could enjoy their kick in an overcrowded space
• The umpiring was a joke for most of the day. The first 3 quarters were heavily biased towards Freo. They had 11 frees to 1 at half time. Some of which were ridiculous and resulted in goals. The umpires made sure the free kick count didn’t look too bad by the end of the game by offering Melbourne some useless frees that were called advantage anyways.
• Green flags for goal umpires are not a good look. Why do goal umpires have to wear those ridiculous colours anyways? Who is going to pass it to the goal umpire anyways? Somebody trying to kick a goal? Then it will probably be a goal anyways. Who is going to pass it to somebody wearing a scientist’s lab coat anyways?
• I love how they had the lights on at the ground to begin with because the weather was a bit dodgy. That’s great for the green round surely. Especially when they were on well before the start of play.
• Robbo is just as exciting as Jurrah is sometimes. He tries to take marks off peoples shoulders even when he could just go for the ball and take a normal mark. There was one occasion where he was almost horizontal to the ground trying to get to the ball off someone’s shoulders.

Supercoach news

Aaron Davey is back with a big 146 SuperCoach points. Amazingly seven Melbourne players got to 100 SuperCoach points; Valenti, Bate, Davey, McLean, McDonald, Moloney and Jones, compared to three Fremantle players; Pav’, Sandilands and Hasleby. Tom McNamara had a decent second game with 50 SuperCoach points, including a goal, but he mostly played in the backline. Garrick Ibbotson and Neville Jetta were the disappointments for SuperCoaches.

West Coast vs. North Melbourne – Round 20 match review

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

West Coast – 17.8 (110)
North Melbourne – 10.12 (72)

A 7 goal to 2 third quarter set up a 38 point victory for West Coast at home against North Melbourne in a dead rubber.
The likes of Houlihan, Naitanui and Wilson continue to impress for West Coast who are finishing off the year in a good way.
For North, the likes of Anthony and Adams did well in a trying team performance.

Big moment

Adam Selwood whilst on the ground in the goal square somehow managed to throw the ball on his foot whilst his body was rolling to kick a remarkable goal.

Key players for West Coast

Adam Selwood – Best on ground with 33 possessions and 8 inside 50s. ‘Played the link role beautifully.

Tim Houlihan – Ran all day and whilst he didn’t use his 28 possessions well all the time, his appetite for the ball and will to take players on was a highlight.

David Wirrpanda – 3 goals for the game with 2 in the second quarter when the match was tight.

Key players for North Melbourne

Drew Petrie – Continuing to fly the flag for North despite the season being well
over. 4 contested marks and 6 inside50s for him as well.

Brent Harvey – 31 possessions from the skipper leading by example once again.

Liam Anthony – Continues to produce the goods with 29 possessions and 5 inside50s.

Musings from the match

• Skills were pretty poor as you would expect.
• That’s 3 in a row for West Coast now.
• They are 2 games out of the 8’ as well with Adelaide (good record) and Richmond to come!
• Nic Naitanui at the very least will be a damn good ruckman going by this performance.
• Priddis’s 10 clearances deserve a mention as well.
• Luke Adams was very good for North with 20 possessions and 3 goals which including an excellent one on the run at 50’.
• Despite what most people think, there is a fair amount of upside on North’s list.
• Bad game injury-wise for West Coast though with in-form youngsters Chris Masten (PCL) and Mitch Brown (foot fracture) out for the rest of the season.
• When did West Coast learn how to kick straight? 17.8 is unbelievable for a team that has kicked 8.18 and 9.20 in two games this year.

SuperCoach news

I’m spewing I put Adam Selwood on my bench this week after some poor scores. He killed it with a haul of 156pt’s.
Other players to do well were Matt Priddis (151pt’s), Andrew Embley (116pt’s), Patrick McGinnity (111pt’s) and Shannon Hurn (107pt’s) for West Coast.
For North Melbourne it was Liam Anthony (119pt’s), Luke Adams (116pt’s), Andrew Swallow (109pt’s), Scott D. Thompson (108pt’s) and Nathan Grima (103pt’s) who scored well.
Bad news obviously for those with Mitch Brown and Chris Masten who will take no further part of the year.

Richmond vs Collingwood – Round 20 match review

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Richmond – 8.11 (59)
Collingwood – 22.20 (152)

The Collingwood Football Club are on their way to confirming third spot on the ladder come finals time by absolutely destroying Richmond by 93 points, which was the Pies highest winning margin for the season.

Big Moment

The first four goals of the match were goal for goal. Then at the 11 minute mark of the first quarter Shane Tuck kicked poorly from the backline, which caused a turnover. Scott Pendlebury gathered the footy, hand passed onto Heath Shaw, who took a snap shot at goal and kicked truly. Collingwood had kicked two consecutuive goals and never looked back from there.

Key Players for Richmond

Brett Deledio – Went head to head with Pendlebury all afternoon. He was probably Richmond’s best player for the day. He collected 31 possessions (with 22 uncontested), took 6 marks, had 3 inside 50s and kicked a goal.

Chris Newman – Played a solid captains game in a losing side. He ended his afternoon with 25 possessions (including 18 kicks) and laid 4 tackles.

Key Players for Collingwood

Dane Swan – What an absolute gun!!! Another brilliant week! He was tagged by Jackson and then Rance. He collected 34 disposals (with game high 20 kicks, and 23 uncontested possessions), took 7 marks, had an equal game high 6 inside 50s and kicked 2.2. Did someone say brownlow votes?

Dayne Beams – This kid is getting better and better, and could be an outside Rising Star chance in some people’s eyes. He had a good day out with 30 possessions (a game high 25 uncontested), took 7 marks, had a euqal game high 6 inside 50s and kicked a goal.

John Anthony – Finally, a good solid day out and making his supercoach coaches happy. He kicked the first goal of the match and ended the day kicked 3.3 from 6 marks. He collected 15 possessions and had two opponents throughout the day, first McGuane and then Bowden.

Musings from the match

• This win was the Pies biggest win of the year.
• The Pies fell only 8 points short of their biggest winning margin ever against the Tigers
• In Joel Bowden’s farewell match he ended the afternoon collecting 24 disposals (14 I the last quarter).
• For Leigh Brown’s his 200th game will never be forgotten, except for the fact he had a quiet game with only the 12 disposals.
• A melee and then another occurred with Jake King collected Alan Didak behind play. Every player got involved and Jake King was reported for his initial strike on Didak.
• Tom Hislop was reported for rough conduct against Shane O’Bree in the last quarter.
• The 93 point win has boosted Collingwoods percentage from 118.30% to 123.36%.
• Collingwood dominated the Tigers not only on the scoreboard but in all statistics bar one…….clangers (of course).
• The Pies has 118 more disposals (48 more kicks, 70 more handballs).
• The Pies had 10 more contested possessions and a massive 98 more uncontested possessions.
• Collingwood had 34 more inside 50s than the Tigers and 14 more goal assists.

Supercoach news
Dane Swan had another brilliant game, and with that comes another massive score. He scored 149pts for this game (you would be over the moon, with him as your captain). His average per round is now 126pts.
Travis Cloke’s score was probably his best for the year. He scored 143pts and had a solid game.
Shane Tuck and Chris Newman were the only two Tigers to score over 100pts and they score 100 a piece.
If you are still in finals and have Ben Cousins, be cautious he has a possible hamstring injury.
Brad Dick also has a possible shoulder injury.

Hawthorn vs. Adelaide– Round 20 match review

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Hawthorn – 9.13 (67)
Adelaide – 13.16 (94)

Adelaide has moved into 5th spot on the ladder after beating a fast-starting Hawthorn outfit.
It looked like the Hawks were set for a big win after kicking the first 5 goals of the game but unfortunately for them; they only kicked another 4 goals for the rest of the match compared to the Crows 12.

Big moment

After missing a set-shot in the identical area in the 1st quarter, Trent Hentschel kicked a ripper of a set-shot in forward pocket along the boundary, 35 meters out, which put Adelaide in the lead for the first time in the match.

Key players for Hawthorn

Ben McGlynn – Easily the best player for the Hawks with his effort and output. His career best 38 possessions were of pretty good quality, but it was his attack of the ball that was the feature.

Lance Franklin – He didn’t necessarily smash Rutten, but he was always a threat. 4 goals is as pretty good effort considering the poor delivery.

Robert Campbell – Did a very good job on Kurt Tippet, keeping the big man to 1.1 and only 2 marks for the game.

Key players for Adelaide

Ivan Maric – After a disappointing game last week, the big ruckman was excellent around the ground. Finished with 13 possessions and 17 hit-outs to be the best ruckman on the ground.

Graham Johncock – Played an excellent game on Campbell Brown whilst also running off him, ending up with 23 possessions.

Trent Hentschel – 4 goals is an excellent return from his first game back since round 2.

Musings from the match

• Bernie Vince started like a house on fire and ended up finishing with 33 possessions, although they weren’t as damaging as usual.
• Andrew McLeod was also very good for the Crows with his run through the middle.
• Scott Stevens dominated the Hawks forward-line in the last half as a loose man, playing Nathan Bock’s role to perfection.
• Where were all the Hawthorn supporters??? 32,500 is a joke for a “big” club.
• ‘Season effectively over for Hawthorn.
• They successfully started with a man-on-man style before Adelaide changed to their half-court press which stifled the Hawks run.
• Cyril Rioli also kicked an excellent goal in the first quarter with a nice volley to go straight through the middle about 20 meters out’.
• If Adelaide stays in 5th, they could very well be playing Port Adelaide in the first week of the finals.
