Brisbane vs. Collingwood – Round 10 Match Review

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

Brisbane – 13.10 (88)
Collingwood – 11.14 (80)

Brisbane have caused a big upset whilst snapping their 5 game losing streak in a determined 8 point win against Collingwood.

Brisbane were on’ from the bounce but Collingwood managed to keep the Lions at arms length until late in the 3rd term when the home side gained voice thanks to Fevola getting into the game with some great goals.

The final term was a tight affair with Brisbane managing 3 quick goals midway through the term to give them a 9 point lead.
The Pies constantly threatened from then onwards with the Brisbane backline soaking all the pressure that Collingwood applied.

Collingwood vs. Essendon – Round 5 Match Preview

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

SportsBet Odds: $1.31 vs. $3.50

6th vs. 13th

These two teams have had complete opposite starts to the season, with the Pies entering the match with a 3-1 record and the Bombers with a 1-3 record. This young Essendon side should have some big inclusions, and they are known to lift for big matches so this could be a closer encounter than people realise. Collingwood have had accuracy issues over the past couple of weeks, and it caused their only loss (to St Kilda) when the scoreboard pressure was squandered and the Saints surged in the last quarter. Essendon has lost three games. One against Geelong in round one where the Cats surged in the last quarter and the Bombers dropped off, the next a week later against a reborn Fremantle side (the first time Fremantle have beaten Essendon in Melbourne in 12 years), and the last against West Coast last week to give the Eagles their first win of the season. St Kilda vs. Collingwood – Round 3 Match Review

Friday, April 9th, 2010

St Kilda – 10.9 (69)
Collingwood – 4.17 (41)

In arguable the match of the round at Etihad Stadium on Friday night, St Kilda took on Collingwood (and Luke Ball) in a very physical and see-sawing encounter, which saw St Kilda run away  with the points in a tight and low scoring match.
The lead changed on several occasions throughout the match and despite both teams wasting opportunities in front of goal, scoring was mostly goal for goal.

It was not until the opening 10 minutes of the last quarter where the lead extended beyond a small margin and the momentum swung the Saints way after 3 consecutive goals through Adam Schneider, Michael Gardiner and James Gwilt. The Saints then led by 22 points, which pretty much sealed their victory and they eventually won by 28 points. (more…)

St Kilda vs. Collingwood – Round 3 Match Preview

Friday, April 9th, 2010

SportsBet Odds: $1.33 vs. $3.40
1st vs. 5th

St Kilda/Collingwood games always promise a good clash regardless of circumstance and this game has plenty of extra excitement to go with it. The Luke Ball vs. St Kilda saga will finally play out in front of everyone and the football public can’t wait to see what happens.

St Kilda are coming off a big win which is in contrast to the Magpies who just got over the line against an inspired Melbourne side, it’s anyone’s guess how those results will impact on each team’s performance this week but one thing is for sure, both teams are going to come out firing in front of a capacity crowd!

Brisbane Lions vs. Collingwood – Round 4 match recap

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Brisbane Lions – 10.13 (73)
Collingwood – 13.12 (90)

A determined Collingwood avoided becoming 1-3 with a spirited performance to ensure another successful away from home win. The Pies defeated the Brisbane Lions after kicking 6 goals to 1 in the second half of the match and defeating the Lions on their own turf by 17 points.

Turning points of the match
Simon Prestigiacomo being placed onto Jonathan Brown at the beginning of the second quarter, he held the forward to only 2 goals for the entire game. Another significant point was some final quarter statistics; Collingwood in the opening 13 minutes of the fourth quarter had 17 marks compared to the Lions 2 and injuries to Jed Adcock and Jamie Charman forced them to sit out the final quarter and let the Magpies dig deep for a win.

Key Players for Brisbane Lions
Bradd Dalziell – A relatively dominant performance by Dalziell, probably the Lions most consistent and hard working player for the night. Ended with 28 disposals, 17 kicks and 11 handballs and toped his night off with 2 goals.
Jed Adcock – Had an extremely effective and consistent three quarters until he came off with a suspected ankle injury at the beginning of the last quarter. He ran hard at the ball and ended his night with 25 possessions and a goal.
Michael Rischitelli – Finished his night with 13 kicks, 7 marks, 9 tackles and a goal. Most notable part of his game was his attack on the ball against Simon Prestigiacomo in the fourth term, where they crashed into each other at top speeds and Rischitelli took a while to regain his feet and ended up with an unsettled stomach.

Key Players for Collingwood
Scott Pendlebury – A night out for the Pies midfielder, finishing with game high 35 possessions (18 kicks, 17 handballs, 8 marks and 6 tackles).
Harry O’Brien – Played all night on Daniel Bradshaw who had no impact on the match, other than the one behind. O’Brien had12 kicks 6 marks compared to Bradshaw’s 5 kicks and 7 marks.
Josh Fraser – Another big game from the Pies ruckman and acting captain with 23 hit outs 16 kicks and 7 marks, has probably been one of the Pies most dominant players for the season thus far and is in career best form.
Paul Medhurst – The winner of the game for the Pies with 4 goals. He kicked the first 2 goals in the opening minutes of the second quarter, then kicked another later on in that quarter and finished off his run in the last quarter with another six points on the scoreboard. He kicked 4 goals 2 from 11 kicks.

Musings from the match
- Collingwood had 17 marks to the Lions 2 from the 3rd minute mark to the 13th mark of the last quarter
- Brisbane kicked only 1 goal after half time
- In the opening quarter Nathan Brown was on Jonathan Brown and he kicked 2 goals. In the second quarter Simon Prestigiacomo was moved onto Brown and he did not kick another goal. —The Lions also had no forward line presence with their two big forwards Brown and Bradshaw having no influence on the margin.

Supercoach/Dreamteam news
It was Jaxson Barham’s debut game for the Pies and he had 28 disposals, cheap buy and with a game like that should play more this season.
Paul Medhurst, as a small forward has had two good weeks with 3 and then 4 goals, but be cautious of a possible injury.
Be wary of injuries to Jamie Charman and possibly Jed Adcock.
