Collingwood vs. Essendon – Round 5 Match Preview

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

SportsBet Odds: $1.31 vs. $3.50

6th vs. 13th

These two teams have had complete opposite starts to the season, with the Pies entering the match with a 3-1 record and the Bombers with a 1-3 record. This young Essendon side should have some big inclusions, and they are known to lift for big matches so this could be a closer encounter than people realise. Collingwood have had accuracy issues over the past couple of weeks, and it caused their only loss (to St Kilda) when the scoreboard pressure was squandered and the Saints surged in the last quarter. Essendon has lost three games. One against Geelong in round one where the Cats surged in the last quarter and the Bombers dropped off, the next a week later against a reborn Fremantle side (the first time Fremantle have beaten Essendon in Melbourne in 12 years), and the last against West Coast last week to give the Eagles their first win of the season. Key Collingwood Players not attending Arizona Training Camp

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Collingwood players, coaching and fitness staff departed Melbourne on Monday on route to Arizona (for the third consecutive year) for an intense and high altitude camp, but this time not all the Pies players are to be in attendance for the camp.

This year only about 20 players flew over to the Flagstaff training base for some intense training for their pre-season campaign. That leaves about 12 or so players that will be staying put in Melbourne. They will continue to train with coaches, fitness staff/trainers that also remained in Australia. The club believes that some players are better off staying in Melbourne for technical reasons, to work on skills or to recover from surgeries. Some players that stayed in Melbourne include: Josh Fraser, John Anthony and Paul Medhurst.

It was believed that Fraser, Medhurst and Anthony are training under modified programs to assist them with recovery from injuries they sustained during the 2009 season or surgeries they underwent post season.

Many of the Pies young players have also remained in Melbourne, and will be joined by the Pies new recruits following the NAB AFL Draft coming up this Thursday.

The Pies Arizona trip involves intense and high altitude training programs including hikes and weight training 2-3 times a day.

The team that travelled to Arizona will be returning to Melbourne on December 9th.

Collingwood vs. Sydney – Round 21 match review

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Collingwood- 13. 19 (97)
Sydney- 8.8 (56)

In a contested match at the MCG this afternoon Collingwood has prevailed over the Sydney Swans by 41 points. It was a very slow start for both teams, with only 2 goals kicked in the first quarter to Collingwood to the Swans 4 behinds. Even by half time, nothing much had happened and it was a low scoring match, where the winner was difficult to pick.

Big Moment

Collingwood seemed to turn it on after half time and finally put their foot on the pedal. They kicked 5 goals to 2 in the third quarter (three of them being consecutive) and lead by 30 points leading into the last quarter.

Key Players for Collingwood

Dayne Beams – Played his second consecutive outstanding match for the year. He collected equal game high 24 disposals, had 5 uncontested marks and laid 4 tackles. He finished that match with equal most number of contested possessions (10) and the most clearances (6). Outside rising star chance, behind Daniel Rich?

John Anthony – Had a solid match up forward for the Pies kicking 4 goals on Craig Bolton, including the first goal of the match. He collected 15 disposals, took 6 marks and laid 4 tackles.

Key Players for Sydney

Adam Goodes – Started with Prestigiacomo on him and got O’Brien at centre half forward. Had an equal game high 24 disposals (a game high 20 uncontested) and equal game high 17 kicks. He was the Swans only multiple goal kicker, kicking 3.1 from 11 marks (all uncontested).

Darren Jolly – Was the best of the big men in the middle. He had 32 hit outs against Josh Fraser (7) and Cameron Wood (17). On top of that he had 13 possessions and equal game high 10 contested possessions and 5 clearances.

Musings from the Match

• Collingwood and Sydney are 1st and 2nd for the amount of interchanges for the year. In the first 6 minutes of the match, both teams had 14 interchanges a piece. Meaning 6 minutes into the match a total of 28 interchanges had been made.
• Collingwood were wearing black armbands out of respect for Mick Malthouse’s mother who passed away on Monday.
• The Swans were held goaless in the first quarter only kicking 4 behinds.
• Jarred Moore copped a knee to the ribs in the second quarter which looked bad. He was taken to the hospital and did not participate in the remainder of the match.
• The Sydney Swans 2009 finals aspirations are now officially over, there is no way they can sneak into the finals.
• This match was Rhyce Shaw’s first match against his old side Collingwood on their home turf, the MCG.
• Rhyce Shaw had the tagging job on Collingwood ball magnet Dane Swan and was all over him in the first quarter only letting Swan have the one kick. In the second quarter Swan collected 9 possessions, and seemed to be more involved in the match. But even so, and even though he collected 22 possessions by the end of the match he was not his usual self and not as instrumental and influential as he has been. No Brownlow votes for this match.
• Both teams seemed to have a lot of run in them and a lot of bounces. The Swans had 20bounces (lead by Matthew O’Dwyer with 9 and Rhyce Shaw with 5). The Pies had 39 bounces (lead by Heath Shaw with 19).
• It seems the bounce while running runs in the Shaw family. Rhyce Shaw and Heath Shaw had a total of 24 bounces today and are the leading ball bouncers in the completion. Rhyce as number 1 and Heath as number 2.
• Collingwood only had 9 more disposals than Sydney.
• The Pies had 28 more inside 50s than the Swans; 61-33, but the Swans had more rebound 50s; 42-22.
• The Pies had 12 more marks inside 50.
• The Swans lead by Darren Jolly dominated the hit outs 40 to 26.
• The Pies had more contested possessions but the Swans had more uncontested possessions.
• The Swans were able to shut down the Pies big ball winners in Davis, Pendlebury, Didak and Swan. Yet still managed to lose by over 40 points. What does this say about the Pies? It says that they play as a team and allow contributions from all players and do not solely depend upon only a few players to make their play.
• Collingwood has now won 12 out of their last 13 matches

SuperCoach News

If you stuck with Josh Fraser through his 5 weeks off with injury. You would be relatively happy with his results scoring 96pts.
Both Dane Swan and Alan Didak scored under average point this week, scoring 90pts and 65pts respectively. If you had Swan as your captain this week, you would have felt a tiny bit let down this week, especially because it is his first under 100pts in 12 weeks.
The high scorers this week for the Pies were Dayne Beams (115pts), Leon Davis (115pts), John Anthony (123) and Nick Maxwell (112pts).
For the Swans, Adam Goodes had the highest score, scoring 107pts. He was followed by Lewis Roberts-Thompson scoring 106pts, Heath Grundy scoring 105pts and Paul Bevan scoring 101pts.

Key SuperCoach players for round 16

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Here are a few players that are worth selling/buying/keeping an eye on for SuperCoach from what we’ve seen so far.

Only 3 weeks until the finals!

Bargains of the week

Heath Shaw
Watching him against the Bulldogs, it looked like he was moving better than ever and looks to be over his back issues.
Thanks to Harry O’Brien and Nick Maxwell’s rebounding efforts he wont be tagged like last year and at his price of $434 000, he is a great pick-up

Josh Drummond
He is just a SuperCoach freak. Returned from the calf injury with a nice score of 130pt’s.
As always, he is a risk given his past track record with injuries but it’s hard to go past him when he is massively undervalued at $457 900.

Jonathan Brown
Still cheap at $503 100. Even with a poor score against Port two weeks ago of 47pt’s, he has averaged 115pt’s in the past 5 weeks.
His lowest score against Freo who they have next week is 95pt’s so I’d get on him this week as it’s probably your last chance before you pay through the nose for him.

Jobe Watson
At $515 100 and pretty much impossible to tag, he is a really good pick-up for me. He came back well with 108pt’s this week. Essendon still have three games left at the MCG and with the weather being the way it is in Melbourne, those matches will suit him.

Luke Hodge
He will surely play more in the middle now after his past two games there where he has scored 112pt’s and 144pt’s.
I’m tipping that he will finish with a value of $600 000 by years end injury permitting but right now, he is cheap as at $494 800.
And for an added bonus if pick him up this week; he plays extremely well against the Pies, averaging 133pt’s since 2005. That’s including one game where he injured his hamstring halfway through the game…..

Ben Cousins
If his hamstrings hold up, he is an excellent pick-up at $457 600 and scoring 144pt’s and 129pt’s in the past two weeks.

Robert Murphy
I can’t believe he only scored 101pt’s against the Pies. It seemed like he was involved with everything good the Bulldogs did to me! His price of $380 800 is too good to pass up on a marking half-forward with excellent skills.

The ones that make you go ‘Ouch’ if you’ve got / the ones that you are waiting to bottom out

Jimmy Bartel
From now on, he’ll either be carrying a bruised hip or be rested. He’s a bit too expensive at $559 300 for any of that guff’.

Jed Adcock
Out for the season with a knee injury. Sucks to have $481 500 on your bench doesn’t it?!?!?

Byron Schammer
Here is a good example of players that simply peak during the season. From rounds 1-8 he averaged 103pt’s, but since then he has only averaged 74pt’s. Avoid any Freo player that’s not named Duffield or Broughton anyway.

Sam Fisher
When does weeks of scores below expectation become normal?
He only scored 71pt’s against a team that he scored 100pt’s+ against in the past two seasons.
His price of $384 800 makes him cheap but he needs to start giving us some good performances to make it worth it.

Dean Cox
With a “mystery injury”, get rid of. West Coast has no need to win so they should have no need to play him. At his price of $548 000, I’d recommend Mitch Clark (averaging 104pt’s since becoming the Lions only ruckman) who will give you a little money in the bank.

Josh Fraser
‘Like Bartel, he will either be out, or will be carrying a knee injury for the rest of the season. $448 600 is too much to have either playing lame, or out injured.

Previous players revisited
Travis Cloke wasn’t the bargain I had anticipated last week scoring only 47pt’s this week. Still, I have faith in him especially given that his hands are looking very good still.
Liam Anthony, thank you very much. 148pt’s in his third game says it all.
This years Brad Dalziell for sure.
Lance; Give us another week like that and we will forgive you.

Western Bulldogs vs Collingwood – Round 15 match review

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Western Bulldogs – 16.14 (100)
Collingwood – 17.9 (111)

The Pies have crept over the line, after a disappointing final quarter in which they Dogs domianted and kicked 6 goals to the Pies 1. The Pies came out firing kicking 7 of the first 8 goals of the match, while the Dogs finished strongly kicking 7 of the last 8 goals of the match.
The goal that gave the Pies the win was kicked by Dale Thomas. The Dogs were doing a lot of hand balling in their defensive 50, when the ball fell to the ground and Danye Beams was able to pick it up and kick it towards goals. Dale Thomas marked uncontested and kicked truly to put the Pies 7 points in front with 90 seconds to go. A quick clearance saw the Dogs get the ball into their forward 50 and quick hands from Brad Johnson saw the ball end up with Ryan Griffen which saw a goal get kicked with 17 seconds left on the clock, decreasing the margin to just 1 point.

Big Moment

Leigh Brown got caught with in the ball near the centre square, holding the ball was called and he picked up the ball and kicked it. A 50 metre penalty was then called against him and a goal was kicked by the Dogs to put them within 7 points. The Dogs at this point had kicked the first 4 goals of the last quarter.

Key Players for the Western Bulldogs

Jason Akermanis – Had a strong and high pressure performance. He collected 26 possessions, kicked 2 goals and had 5 strong tackles.

Brian Lake – Played all night on John Anthony and was terrific, running off him much of the time. He held him to no scores and no kicks. Whilst holding him, he managed to collect 24 possessions and take 12 marks.

Ryan Hargrave – Had a solid performance all night, collecting game high 35 possessions (including 24 kicks) and taking 11 marks.

Key Players for Collingwood

Alan Didak – Yet another star performance by Didak. This being his 5th match in a row that he has collected over 30 possessions. He collected 33 disposals this week, took 8 marks and had had equal team high 6 tackles.

Dane Swan – Another consistent game by Swan and this was further indicated with him being awarded the best on ground. He collected 34 disposals, took 6 marks and kicked 2.2.

Nick Maxwell – Was brilliant in defence yet again and helped steady his side. He had 24 disposals, 6 tackles and took 6 marks.

Musings from the match

  • Leon Davis kicked game and career high 4 goals (3 of them came after half time).
  • Up until half time most statistics for both teams were relatively even except for hit outs. This was 25-6 in favour of the Dogs.
  • By the end of the match, hit outs were still in favour of the Dogs 47-14.
  • Collingwood lead the match from 113 of 115 minutes with 3.5 minutes left in the game.
  • The crowd attendance for this clash between 3rd and 4th position was 51,383.
  • The Pies have won 7 matches in a row, which has not happened since their last Premiership season in 1990 under Leigh Matthews.
  • The Dogs finished the match with 23 more disposals than the Pies (including 21 more kicks and 2 more handballs)
  • The Pies were almost 20% more accurate than the Dogs in front of goal.
  • The Dogs had 15 more inside 50s than the Pies, but the Pies had 16 more rebound 50s.
  • The Dogs probably lost the game due to missed opportunites

Supercoach news

Alan Didak – He has collected 30+ possessions in his past 5 games and looks to be in stellar form. He scored a great 132 this week, and his high percentage of kicks means that if he keeps those figures up his scores will stay high too.

Dane Swan – 34 possessions, half of those were kicks, and two goals. Has been in good form all year and looks like keeping it.

Ryan Hargrave – Scored a massive 140 this week from a game high 35 disposals. He also took 11 marks and still scored high despite having 3 frees against.

Josh Fraser limped of the ground about 5 minutes into the last quarter and then went straight into the rooms. He may have aggrevated his knee; this is the same knee that had posterior ligament damage on earlier in the year.

Collingwood vs Essendon – Round 14 match review

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

Collingwood – 15.12 (102)

Essendon – 9.13 (67)

Collingwood have won their 6th game in a row on Friday night against a disappointing Essendon side. The Pies outclassed the Bombers for one quarter and that proved the difference as they ran out 35 point victors. It was a hard fought game for the first, third and fourth quarters but the Pies kicked 7 goals to 1 in the second quarter and that proved the difference. The Bombers were wasteful in the first quarter and would have felt their 2 point lead should have been 3 goals having missed some golden opportunities.

Big Moment

Dale Thomas’ goal in the third quarter was a stunner. Soccered off the ground out of Fletchers gadget hands and through the big posts.

Key Players for Collingwood

Alan Didak – Yet another outstanding performance with 35 possessions. It looks like he has hit some fantastic form that is here to stay.

Travis Cloke – 19 disposals, 9 marks and 4.2 for the night showed he has found some rare form after following up last weeks decent effort.

Josh Fraser – Dominated the ruck with 35 hit outs, 15 more than the Bombers entire team. Also picked up 23 disposals and chipped in with 1.1, his goal was a brilliant snap after taking the ball out of the ruck.

Key Players for Essendon

Brent Prismall – He looks settled in the Bombers midfield now and is just getting better. He collected 28 disposals, 8 of those contested, 5 marks and 5 tackles.

Scott Lucas – Has kicked a few in each of his games since returning to the side and was the Bombers top goal scorer with 3.1. He also worked hard up the ground gathering 18 disposals, 6 of those were contested.

Adam McPhee – Played pretty well down back, despite Cloke getting on top of him. 29 disposals was the Bombers highest.

Musings from the match

· 13-2 hit outs to advantage in favour of the Pies.

· The umpiring in the second quarter was a little suspect, especially when Leon Davis clearly threw the ball out of a pack with one hand eventually resulting in a Pies goal.

· The Bombers were a little unlucky in the third. They had much of the run but the Pies were able to pull goals out of nowhere to keep the Dons out of it.

· It was a disappointing game to watch for Bombers supporters after their stunning performance last week against the Blues.

· The Pies have now won 6 in a row, only the second time that has happened under the Malthouse regime.

Supercoach news

Josh Fraser, Travis Cloke and Alan Didak all scored over 130 points this week. Don’t get on the Cloke bandwagon yet though, he is known to be inconsistant. The Didak ship has already sailed with him getting really expensive now. Fraser has been consistant for most of the year so if you need a ruckman he might be good.

Dayne Beams got 94 last week and 97 this week. His price is sure to rise so those who have had him since the start will be licking their lips.

Those who got on the Scott Lucas bandwagon will be happy with his return. I know I’m content. Look into getting Brent Prismall also, I almost already did but went for Andrew Welsh instead… Broke my rule of not picking up a tagger and it didn’t pay off.
