Essendon vs Brisbane – Round 21 Match Review

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

Essendon – 10.8 (68)
Brisbane – 14.11 (95)

Brisbane has continued its ascent up the ladder, albeit much too late in the season, with a convincing 27 point victory over the Bombers. The win moves the Lions up to 13th on the ladder just weeks after they were fighting to avoid the wooden spoon. The match was still one that reflected the teams ladder positions, with turnovers a plenty throughout the match. (more…)

West Coast vs Brisbane – Round 19 Match Review

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

West Coast – 9.11 (65)
Brisbane – 10.10 (70)

In the battle for the wooden spoon Brisbane has come out on top over West Coast, but only just. The Lions drew away from their opponents on several occasions during the night, but the Eagles wouldn’t lie down as they almost always found a way back into the game. That’s not to say the match was full of slick skills and free flowing footy; there was a total of 85 clangers, including 51 from Brisbane. (more…)

Brisbane vs St Kilda – Round 15 Match Review

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

Brisbane – 10.5 (65)
St Kilda – 11.13 (79)

Nick Riewoldt has made a semi-successful return to AFL football after injuring his hamstring all the way back in round 3. The Saints star played just 80 minutes in his side’s 14 point victory over the Lions, and whilst he was on the field the Lions were not giving him a inch. (more…)

Brisbane Mid-season Review

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Current Ladder Position: 11th

Flag Odds: $151

ContestedFooty’s start of the year preview

5th-7th 2009 saw Michael Voss coach his first AFL season, and most people would see it as successful. The Lions finished 6th on the ladder, made finals, and even won their first final. The young players started to mature well under the leadership of the older players. The Lions were heavily involved in trade week, indicating they believe themselves to be on the cusp of something great. See the preview here. (more…)

Adelaide vs. Brisbane – Round 9 Match Preview

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

SportsBet odds: $2.22 vs. $1.66

15th vs. 9th

Preseason, this game would have been a highly anticipated clash, but thanks to the wonderful thing that is injuries; both teams are struggling, and struggling badly.

Adelaide’s in particular has an astonishing 15 players, unavailable for selection although 3 players are suspended for staying out “beyond a reasonable hour” over the weekend. To make matters worst Bernie Vince, the winner of the Best & Fairest last year is one of those players.

Brisbane’s injury troubles are compounding their poor performances by the fact that they include Brown and Fevola; the team’s main two weapons. Both are listed to play and have been at Adelaide to see a groin specialist to see if they can get over the injury.

The Lions got smashed by Brisbane, being made to look second-rate, whilst Adelaide were terrible for 3 quarters against North Melbourne to then ‘wake up’ and nearly undeservedly snatch victory.
Basically, both teams were shocking last week.
With both teams losing 3 out of their last games, it’s not being to be pretty. (more…)

Brisbane vs. Fremantle – Round 7 Match Review

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Brisbane – 15.10 (100)
Fremantle – 15.23 (113)

An inaccurate Fremantle has overcome a last quarter surge from the Brisbane Lions to notch up win number six of season 2010. The game looked to be going the way of Fremantle in the last quarter until the Lions mounted a gallant comeback in the final term kicking 5 goals to 3. (more…)

Brisbane vs. Western Bulldogs – Round 4 Match Review

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Brisbane–13.23 (101)
Western Bulldogs – 12.7 (79)

A very inaccurate Brisbane side has remained undefeated in 2010 with a win over the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba. This encounter was close for most of the night with the Lions led by Brendan Fevola kicking away in the final term to seal victory. The victory does a lot for the ambitions of Brisbane in 2010 showing they can beat fancied opponents. While for the Bulldogs it shows that while pre-season form is great, getting to a premiership is not going to be as easy. (more…)

Port Adelaide vs. Brisbane – Round 3 Match Review

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Port Adelaide – 11.15 (81)
Brisbane– 16.12 (108)

The Brisbane Lions have remained undefeated in 2010 with a solid victory over Port Adelaide.  In another dominant performance from Brown and Fevola the Lions were able to hold off a stronger finishing Port.  The power kicked 5 goals to 2 in the final term but were just too far behind to really challenge the victory. The Lions came off a 9 day break and looked all the better for it while Port Adelaide will be left ruing missed opportunities in the second term where they only managed 2 goals and 7 behinds. (more…)

Western Bulldogs vs Brisbane – NAB Cup Round 1 Match Review

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Western Bulldogs – 1.5.14 (53)
Brisbane Lions – 1.5.6 (45)

An inaccurate and at times sluggish Western Bulldogs side managed to overcome the Lions by 8 points in horrible conditions.

The Bulldogs looked ordinary in the first half and it wasn’t until Leon Cameron used his lungs to their full capacity at half time that the Bulldog players woke up. The third quarter was instrumental in the result as the Dogs got motoring with 9 shots on goal.
It’s hard to read much into this game, the conditions were abnormal and the result was more about who wanted to win more, importantly for both clubs they come out of the game injury free.

Key Players for the Western Bulldogs

Adam Cooney – Despite a tag and the conditions Cooney managed to accumulate 19 touches and looked all the better for the hitout.

Daniel Giansiracusa – 21 touches on a soaking football ground is a great effort, ‘Gia’ will be a solid contributor again this year.

Ryan Griffen – Kicked the winning super goal whilst accumulating 14 touches and laying 5 tackles is a good day at the office.

Key Players for Brisbane

Amon Buchanan – Started with a bang but tapered off. Amon still finished with 21 touches and 3 tackles.

Justin Sherman – 3 goals including one super goal in those conditions deserve to get anyone a mention and Sherman also got the footy 15 times.

Michael Rischitelli – Tagged Cooney and almost broke even with 17 disposals and 7 tackles.

Musings from the Match
• You can’t read too much into this game, it was a slog and both clubs first hit out.
• Shaun Higgins scared a lot of people with a knock to his leg in the last quarter but reports are he’ll be alright.
• It was hard to judge Fevola due to conditions and the quality of supply.
• Brian Lake started forward but didn’t have a massive impact.

SuperCoach Musings

Again this game is hard to use to judge anyone and should be taken with a grain of salt. Griffen and Picken managed to top score for the Bulldogs with 113 and 109 SuperCoach Points respectively. For the Lions it was Rockliff and Sherman with 142 and 128 SuperCoach Points. Sherman is the one I’m most excited about from this game beyond that I’m not going to take much away for fantasy football purposes.
