Carlton vs. Richmond – Round 20 Match Review

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

Carlton – 23.18 (156)
Richmond – 10.7 (67)

Carlton has cemented its spot in the top 8 with an emphatic victory over a disappointing Richmond side. The first term saw the Blues lead by just 11 points but had 6 more scoring shots than the Tigers. From that point on it was the Blues who dominated kicking seven goals to nil in the second quarter to set up the win. (more…)

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

Melbourne – 16.13 (109)
Richmond – 11.14 (80)

Melbourne were 29 points the better of Richmond in a tight contest until the last quarter. Richmond played well in the midfield. When Melbourne got the ball on a fast break their were able to go over the zone and damage the Tigers. (more…)

Collingwood – 19.13 (127)

The Collingwood Football Club has consolidated their position at the top of the AFL ladder after 17 rounds by a convincing 82 point win of Richmond at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.

The Pies dominated the match all afternoon and kicked the first 5 goals of the match to lead by 23 points at the first break. They then opened up the second quarter by kicking the first 5 goals once to put the game beyond doubt of the flat Tigers ever catching up.

Sydney vs. Richmond – Round 3 Match Preview

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

SportsBet Odds: $1.09 vs. $8.00
9th vs. 16th

Sydney had only an 8 point loss to St Kilda in Round 1 and was too strong for a disappointing Adelaide side last week and won by 43 points. Richmond on the other side of the scale have hand Richmond have hit a wall early and have had 2 massive losses; one to Carlton by 56 points and the other to the Western Bulldogs by 72. Funnily enough the in the Tigers two losses their opposition has finished on 120 points.
If their past encounters are anything to go by all signs are pointing to the Swans. They have won their 7 last encounters against the Tigers (2 at the MCG, 4 at the SCG and 1 at Etihad Stadium) by an average of 57 points.
The Tigers are very close to looking down the barrel of a 0-3 win/loss ratio for season 2010, and this unfortunately seems like it will be another blow over match. (more…)

Top 5 Most Important Players to Richmond

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

To do a top 5 of this nature is very difficult as you have to weigh up players respective talents but also aspects such as players importance to structure for the list. When looking over my top 5 for Richmond please keep in mind I’m not rating them in order of talent but rather their importance to Richmond’s chances of winning games in 2010.

1. Jack Riewoldt
It seems funny to have a player who has played only 46 games in his career as a club’s most important player but Riewoldt is vital to the Tigers structure. Playing center half forward it is Riewoldt’s role to straighten his team up and provide a target for their midfield.
Then beyond that Riewoldt hasn’t been successful in 2010 unless he averages at least 2 goals a game (probably should be 3) which is a big ask for a player that has averaged 1.2 goals a game in his career thus far.

2. Troy Simmonds
Simmonds needs to deliver in 2010, Vickery isn’t ready to be the number one ruckman yet and is needed down forward to take pressure off the other Tiger forwards. Personally I don’t think Simmonds will deliver some of his better form, but if he does it will go some way to helping the Tigers win games both because he has the potential to influence games and because it allows the Tigers to structure up better.

3. Ben Cousins
Makes the list for his leadership value. Cousins leads by example and will continually bust his gut for the Tigers, hopefully this rubs off on some of his younger team mates. Beyond that if Cousins can deliver even two thirds of his best form next year on a consistent basis the Tigers will win more games, you can lock that away.

4. Brett Deledio
I have so much time for the talent Deledio possesses, I truly believe he is capable of altering the course of play with 10 minutes of his best footy. That doesn’t happen often enough. Hopefully with Damien Hardwick at the helm he’ll start to deliver more consistent football going forward.

5. Mitch Morton
I love this guy; he senses the possibility to go in for the kill and backs himself, which is exactly what a forward should do. If he can kick 2-3 goals a game it will take pressure off the other forwards and allow them to concentrate on playing their role. I expect a few 5 goal plus bags in 2010 from Morton.

Richmond vs. Hawthorn – Round 21 match review

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Richmond – 14.9 (93)
Hawthorn – 20.15 (135)

Hawthorns previously slim finals chances are alive and well with a good victory against the Tigers.
It was the Hawks superstars in Franklin, Hodge and Mitchell leading the way for the entire night.

Big moment

In the 3rd quarter when the game was still up for grabs, Ben Cousins had the ball in the Hawks forward-line trying weave himself out of traffic which gave Lance Franklin time to line him up and deliver a beautiful and legal bump which in the end, knocked the Richmond player out.

Key players for Richmond

Brett Deledio – An excellent game against the flow. He has really stepped up his game in recent weeks. Never gives up and would be a top 10 player if he had a better team around him. 36 possessions and 2 goals.

Nathan Brown – After being embarrassed last week, he showed that he may be a chance to play on next year playing further up the ground. Pretty handy considering that he did it in front of Damien Hardwick……

Mitch Morton – Kicked 3 goals straight and always looked like creating problems when the ball was near him.

Key players for Hawthorn

Lance Franklin – Probably his most physically imposing performance of his career whilst also kicking goals and picking up possessions in the midfield. If he had his kicking boots on(he finished with 5.6), it would have been one of the more standout performances from any player all year.

Luke Hodge – An excellent game from the milestone man (150 games) with 30 possessions. ‘Love watching him play, especially when he got to use that left-foot a fair bit. He, along with Sewell and Mitchell were dominant in the stoppages with 9 clearances himself.

Sam Mitchell – Used the ball very well in his usual performance behind the ball in which he has really grown into. Got the ball 35 times and had 7 clearances.

Musings from the match

• Providing Essendon lose against Freo, what a game it will be next Saturday afternoon with the Hawks playing Essendon for the spot in the 8’.
• With all of Hawthorns best players performing well, they would have to be a fair chance, but still; they only beat a Richmond outfit that had little to play for.
• Brad Sewell was also very, very good for Hawthorn with his usual strength over the ball on display finishing with 26 possessions.
• Graham Polak was rusty as you would expect.
• He’s still courageous as ever though.
• Max Bailey (man freaking mountain) was very good in ruck contests although he didn’t offer much around the ground. Very good performance all up though.
• Will Thurstfield came off second best in a massive clash of bodies between himself and Liam Shiels whilst going for a ground ball. It looked like he sustained a serious shoulder injury, but according to reports, he may be alright for next weeks game.
• So Richmond is now guaranteed pick number 4. It’s not all bad Tiges!
• Josh Kennedy is hilarious when he has a chance to kick a goal. Like a rabbit in headlights. He stuffed up a golden chance to kick one but somehow managed to get caught with the ball.
• Beau Dowler played one of his best games of his young career kicking 4 goals for the game.

SuperCoach news

The highest scorer of the game was in the losing team with Brett Deledio scoring a well deserved 163pt’s. He was the only Richmond player who scored over 100pt’s.
The Hawks had 8 players to score over 100pt’s for the game with Franklin (141pt’s), Mitchell (128pt’s), Dowler (116pt’s), Birchall (114pt’s), Kennedy (113pt’s), Bateman (112pt’s), Hodge (111pt’s) and Sewell (107pt’s) to do well.
Hodge, Sewell and Franklin had 14 clangers between them which obviously impacted on their scores a fair bit.

Richmond vs. North Melbourne – Round 16 match review

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Richmond – 12.13 (85)
North Melbourne – 12.13 (85)

Richmond and North Melbourne have played out the first draw for the season.

It was a game that saw Richmond slip-up with a 43 point lead early in the 3rd quarter, coupled with a frantic last quarter in which both teams had chances get the four-points.

Big moment
Which one? Mitch Morton’s soccered goal to tie the scores Richmond’s second goal for the half and ended up being the final score for the game.

Key Players for the Richmond
Richard Tambling – Playing like a gun. Doesn’t shirk a contest and works his socks off which goes well with his excellent disposal. He finished with 27 possessions.
Chris Newman – As usual, the captain lead the way with 8 inside-50s and 3 scoring assists.
Shane Edwards – Played down in the backline with only 16 possessions but he gave Richmond a heap of run and was never afraid to take the game on.

Key Players for North Melbourne
Brent Harvey – A true captain’s game dragging North into the game after it looked like it was over. You can’t argue with 31 possessions and 2 goals as well.
Leigh Harding – Kicked 3 very important goals whilst also getting the ball 17 times. His hard running was excellent.
Hamish McIntosh – Another good game, dominating the ruck with 31 hitouts and 20 possessions.

Musings from the match
• The likes of Deledio, Grima, Morton and Swallow were also very good today.
• Morton’s work-rate was particularly impressive.
• What is it with Richmond and draws??!?!!
• Considering that Nathan Foley was already injured and Trent Cotchin and Ben Cousins were late withdrawals with a “virus”, Richmond did pretty well.

• Two “virus” withdrawals?!?!?! That’s incompetent injury mismanagement masking at it’s best!
• So that will be four games in a row for Darren Crocker that they could have won.
• There were some dubious umpire calls that definitely shaped the outcome of the game.
• Andrew Swallow is a tackling machine – He finished with 12 for the game (after 13 last week) and had to play out the game with a corked hip.
• The Brady Rawlings experiment of playing him on thee dangerous small-forward didn’t go to well today with Robin Nahas using his excellent agility to kick two goals whilst also getting the ball 17 times.

SuperCoach news
Leigh Harding had his second-best score for the year with a point’s haul of 141. He also was the highest scorer on the ground.
Mitch Morton scored 129pt’s with his 20 possession, 3 goal and 6 tackle performance.
Shane Tuck had his worst game in some time for SuperCoach with a score of 69pt’s thanks to 3 clangers and a 54% disposal efficiency rating.

Brent’s Weekly Bite

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Welcome to the second installment of my Weekly Bite. The week has been one that has not raised as many issues as before being the split round but here is my top and bottom four for this week in Football.

THE TOP FOUR

1. ROUND 14 SAINTS VS. CATS – Both sides remain undefeated going into round 13 of Football. Geelong play host to Port Adelaide at Skilled Stadium while the Saints encounter Richmond at Etihad Stadium. All things going well both teams should enter the round 14 clash still without a defeat which is the AFL’s dream. Despite the game not being played at the MCG it sill will be the biggest game of 2009 to date. Who do we think will take a victory away in round 14 and remain undefeated?

2. LIAM JURRAH – Another exciting debut in season 2009 with Jurrah having his first run for the Demons against Essendon. Really enjoyed his game and especially his first Goal in senior footy. Could have easily had a couple more. Showed a lot of poise and also class with his skills. Definantly one to watch in the coming years.

3. NATHAN BUCKLEY – Will he, wont he, will he, wont he. The speculation on Nathan Buckley coaching in 2010 is beginning to hit fever pitch with everyone talking up his prospects and what job he will take. Buckley has been in America furthering his coaching credentials for a tilt at one of the jobs on offer. Where will Buckley be in 2010 and will he be ready to coach at senior level?

4. BRENT PRISMALL – The ex-cat has made a successful return to AFL football after a knee reconstruction towards the end of 2008. In my eyes was always unlucky not to get more games down at the Cattery. Showed that he has the ability to run in the midfield with a very solid game Friday night for the Bombers. Got a lot of the ball and used it well throughout the night. Really happy to see this guy doing well.

THE BOTTOM FOUR

1. THE MITCH MORTON KICK – I am beginning to become increasingly annoyed with the Mitch Morton style of set shot. The opening of the angle and then snapping the ball through the Goals. I understand this can work well for many players but on Sunday I witnessed two Geelong players try this style. Tom Hawkins successfully and Gary Ablett not so. My point is guys like Gary Ablett have great skills and do not need to use this set shot style to kick for goal, so please don’t. I am sure Gary Snr had some advice for his son after the set shot.

2. UMPIRES – Don’t get me wrong I love when the umpires start to let the play go more and pay fewer free kicks. If this is going to be the case however can the umpires ensure that consistency is across all games and also both ends of the ground? Case in point was Fremantle vs. Geelong, too much inconsistency, if you are not going to pay them all day fine, but don’t then pay them late in games. What do we all think of the new relaxed umpiring?

3. SPLIT ROUNDS – The idea of the split round is beginning to wear thin with myself and many others in the Football community. I like the idea of teams having a break but why can’t it happen on the same weekend? This year has justified to me why I don’t think the split round should happen. Three games in the second week with no games at the MCG on a Saturday. An odd split that will advantage and disadvantage many clubs in this week coming. If the split round is to continue it needs to be a proper 4 and 4 split or just a straight out by. Why not in the by week showcase the TAC cup?

4. JACK WATTS – Unfair the criticism that is being leveled at young Jack Watts of the Demons at the moment. I understand he may look like a boy playing amongst men but surely that is a problem with the club and selectors and not the player himself. I would agree he probably should not be in the senior’s side as he has many other commitments during his final year of school (I and many others understand the pressure). If he is happy to play senior football and the club selects him I have no problem with that but I do have a problem with the level of criticism by Demon supporters especially.

Richmond vs. West Coast – Round 12 match recap

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

Richmond – 13.14 (92)
West Coast –11.11 (77)

Jade Rawlings has been rewarded with a first-up victory against a West Coast outfit that were flat-footed from the opening bounce and were forced to play catch-up from there onwards.

Big moment
Mitch Mortons 2 goals in the first 3 minutes of the last quarter from strong marks added to a buffer that kept West Coast at bay, after it looked like they were coming.

Key Players for the Richmond
• Mitch Morton – He was dominant in the first and last quarters with excellent hands and about 4 different opponents. Finished with 5 goals but also kicked 3 behinds.
• Nathan Foley – Typical full-tilt game from Foley. Finished with 31 possessions and used it really well.
• Richard Tambling – Along with Morton, he was the dominant player on the ground in the first quarter laying the foundations for the win with a lot of key touches.
• Luke McGuane – Got touched-up by Josh Kennedy in the second quarter but then never gave him a sniff’ thereafter.

Key Players for West Coast
• Mark LeCras – Kicked 3 goals whilst also having a little bit of a run through the midfield collecting 23 possessions. He has become an extremely dangerous player.
• Shannon Hurn – His excellent kicking was there again for all to see. Did a really good job on Nahas as well.
• David Wirrpunda – He was the catalyst for the comeback in the 2nd quarter for me with some excellent touches to set up a few goals in succession.
• Josh Kennedy – Along with Wirrpunda, dragged West Coast back into the game with an excellent 2nd quarter kicking 4 goals on McGaune. He unfortunately was kept quiet after that.

Musings from the match
• Like last night, the first quarter killed the losing team.
• Both teams were very wasteful in front of goal – West Coast could have easily won it and Richmond could have finished the game off in the first quarter.
• Ben Cousins was also very good for the Tigers with a few excellent disposals at the start of the fourth quarter when the game was there to be won.
• Daniel Kerr was kept pretty quiet by Daniel Jackson in a physical battle.
• Chris Masten must have an excellent tank on him given that he always seems to finish off games really well. He was one of their better players finishing with 28 possessions.
• The Tigers dominated the clearances for the first 3 quarters but it was only in the first quarter when it really showed.
• That was perbably because it was about 9 to 2.
• The move of Adam Selwood to the forward line in the 2nd half worked pretty well, always creating a contest.
• In a few years, you could see yourself going to the footy just to watch Nic Naitanui.
• Stating the obvious here, but he is going to be darn’ good.

SuperCoach news
• Concerns of the Tigers SuperCoach scoring points potential under Jade Rawlings can go away going on that performance – They still love to possess the ball.
• As you would expect Morton had the highest score of the game with 155pt’s.
• Foley, Tambling, McGuane, Polo, Edwards, Priddis and Glass were the ones to score 100+.
• First gamers Naitanui and Vickery had ok first-up games. They will get games but they won’t score big.
• Dean Cox had a ‘poor’ game with 93pt’s.
