Monday, August 23rd, 2010Fremantle vs Essendon – Round 21 match review
Sunday, August 23rd, 2009Fremantle – 21.15 (141)
Essendon – 13.9 (87)
Essendon have ruined their chance at securing the final spot in finals on Sunday afternoon by going down to Fremantle in Perth. Had the Bombers won they would have been a game and a half clear of fellow contenders in Port Adelaide and Hawthorn, but will now play off with the Hawks next week with the winner likely to go into September. Fremantle looked the better side for much of the day with the home side managing to move the ball forward with much more purpose. Late injuries to the Bombers means they look like fielding a very undermanned side for the finals berth decider against Hawthorn next week.
Big Moment
David Mundy snapped a goal late in the second from a seemingly impossible angle and it took the Dockers to a lead of 21 points.
Key Players for Fremantle
Paul Haselby – Had a fantastic day out, with a stellar third quarter. He tagged Jobe Watson completely out of the game, while having an impact himself. Only had 13 disposals but kicked a goal, layed 3 tackles and had 2 inside 50s.
Aaron Sandilands – Dominated the ruck dual with no real competition for the giant. 42 hit outs and 21 disposals isn’t a bad day out.
Nick Suban – Continued his impressive year and would have enjoyed collecting his 25 disposals, 2 goals, 4 tackles, 8 clearances, and 7 inside 50s. That’s a field day in my books.
Key Players for Essendon
Andrew Lovett – The man that the Bombers use to run had a decent game amongst a team of poor efforts. He collected 22 disposals, 3 clearances and had a massive 9 inside 50s.
Nathan Lovett-Murray – One of the Bombers leading possession gatherers with 22, and with an efficiency of 91% he used it well all day. He also had 3 inside 50s and 4 tackles.
Musings from the match
• Paddy Ryder was sorely missed with Aaron Sandilands running riot.
• Fremantle dominated the clearances, no doubt aided by their ruck advantage.
• It was a complete domination by the home side.
• Fremantle have secured the wooden spoon for Melbourne regardless of results next week.
• Essendon continue to show why they are not ready for finals despite defeating St Kilda last week.
• Stephen Hill had a quiet game, no doubt feeling the effects of a ful season of AFL footy.
• Fremantle showed Angus Monfries the respect he should have received last week against St Kilda and was well beaten.
• It’s all well and good to be an offensive running team, but Essendon need to run defensively to back it up. Too many times Fremantle rebounded and had 3 or 4 free players and scored a goal through one of them.
• Fremantle kicked their biggest score for the year, not good news for the Bombers.
Supercoach news
Jobe Watson – He had his worst game for the year after having one of his best ever last week. Only gathered 6 posessions, but with a disposal efficiency of 100%, a goal, 2 tackles and 2 clearances he still got 47 points. He looked to be injured too so may miss next week.
Alwyn Davey – Injured his shoulder late in the game and it didn’t look good.
Jarrod Atkinson – Also injured late in the game, for him it was a calf.
Aaron Sandilands – Top scored for the game with 135, but that’s not surprising at all.
Brent Stanton – Top scored for the Bombers with 111 but most of his effort was in junk time.
Fremantle vs. West Coast- Round 17 match review
Saturday, July 25th, 2009Fremantle 10.11. (71)
West Coast 8.18. (66)
In a typically close game the Fremantle Dockers were able to get off the bottom of the ladder with a 5 point win against the West Coast Eagles. The result could have been very different if not for West Coast’s ridiculously poor kicking for goal; the Eagles finished with 18 behinds.
Big Moment
Sandilands proved to be the difference in this game dominating the hit-outs and getting a lot of the ball- the contests around the ground in the last quarter could have gone the other way if not for his input.
Key Players for Fremantle
Aaron Sandilands – Amazing impact in his first game back, as mentioned he dominated the ruck with 31 hit outs but he also managed to get his hands on the leather an impressive 30 times!
Mathew Pavlich – Despite being tagged by Adam Selwood, Pavlich was irrepressible playing on the ball and finished with 36 touches and 8 tackles in a game that highlighted his importance to the Dockers.
Paul Hasleby – 33 touches on the ever improving Chris Masten through hard running and solid attack on the ball.
Key Players for West Coast
Adam Selwood – Despite unsuccessfully stopping Mathew Pavlich, Selwood had an impact on the game himself, snagged a goal in amongst his 28 touches.
Quinten Lynch – Took 10 marks in what was a reasonable game, unfortunately he didn’t put any scoreboard pressure on with his 23 touches.
Musings from the Match
• Good luck trying to pick derby games.
• Tim Ruffles did his knee.
• Dean Solomon has been reported.
• Neither of these teams looked good.
• Despite the match being close I really didn’t enjoy watching it due to the skill errors of both teams.
SuperCoach
Only 7 players cracked the 100 point barrier; 3 from Fremantle (Pavlich with 130, Sandilands with 136 and Broughton with 105 points.) and 4 from West Coast (116 from Priddis, 119 from Rosa, 110 from Embley and 102 from Wirrpanda).
Swift looked okay but only scored 43 points, might be worth looking at next year.
Collingwood vs Fremantle – Round 13 Match Recap
Saturday, June 27th, 2009Collingwood – 26.13 (169)
Fremantle – 13.7 (85)
Collingwood has won its fifth consecutive match and staked a claim for a top four finish in Season 09’ after absolutely smashing a run down and under-manned Fremantle side after a thrilling final quarter. This saw the Pies kicking 7 unanswered goals and overall 10 goals to 2 in the last quarter to blow out the margin to win by 84 points.
Big Moment
Collingwood had an extremely solid first quarter kicking 6 goals to Fremantle’s 2, but the Dockers came back in the second quarter and beat the Pies in goals.

The Pies had the momentum leading into the final quarter and blew the game and the Dockers apart kicking 10 goals to the Dockers 2.
Key Players for Collingwood
Dane Swan – Was tagged all match by Matthew DeBoer and dominated him. He played a yet again outstanding game and was everywhere, all the time. He had 41 possessions, 11 marks, 3 tackles and kicked 1.1.
Alan Didak – Kicked the first goal of the match and was tagged by Dockers youngster Greg Broughton and won the battle. He had his second good game in a row and possible career best effort. He kicked 2 goals and collected career high 39 possessions.
Travis Cloke – Played on Antoni Grover who had some tightness in his thigh. Kicked a season high 3 goals and had probably his beat game for the season. He had 17 disposals and 8 marks.
Dayne Beams – Even though he came off with a possible ankle problem in the second quarter he came back in the second half and ended up having a good impact on the match. He had 22 disposals and kicked 2 goals in his return to senior footy.

Paul Hasleby – Had a very busy match and ran hard the entire game. He had 33 possessions, kicked 1 goal and took 10 marks
Paul Duffield – Played a good match especially in the third quarter and assisted the Dockers in keeping up with the Pies after moving from half back to the midfield. He collected 25 possessions and took 4 marks.
Musing from the Match
• Leon Davis was a late withdrawal for the Pies, with a virus; he was replaced by Paul Medhurst, in his first game back for the Pies since his ankle injury.
• Clancee Pearce was a late withdrawal for the Dockers; he was replaced by Des Headland .
• There was no coin toss at the beginning of the match. Apparently it’s the home team’s responsibility to sell the coin toss to someone (e.g. auction it off). But there was no coin, so the two captains (Maxwell and Pavlich) spoke and Pavlich stated he wanted to kick towards the Punt Road end first and Maxwell was happy to kick towards the city end.
• Season high 3 goals in a match for Travis Cloke.
• In the second half the Pies kicked 16 goals to the Dockers 6 to set up with 84 point winning margin.
• Collingwood’s most prominent players in this match: Didak and Swan collected 80 possessions between them.
• The closest possession winner to Didak and Swan was Fremantle’s Paul Hasleby with 33.
• Collingwood dominated in marks, handballs, kicks and overall disposals.
• Alan Didak had game high 31 kicks followed behind by Swans 24.
• Fremantle dominated the hit outs 55-17, mostly through Sandilands’ 44. But the Pies had 6 more clearances.
• Collingwood had 5 more clangers than Fremantle.
• Collingwood had 22 more inside 50’s but 5 less rebound 50’s.
• Collingwood had 13 individual goal scorers, 9 of them kicked multiple goals.
• Paul Medhurst . had a relatively good first game back for the Pies, kicking 3 goals. It will be interesting to see which player will be dropped to make way for Leon Davis who was only out of the team due to injury..
SuperCoach News
Keep an eye on the following possibly injured players:
• Matthew Pavlich came off the ground with a possible calf injury in the second quarter; he may be out for 3-4 weeks. He finished with 21 SuperCoach points, very disappointed for people like myself who have him in their teams.
• Antoni Grover had thigh tightness also in the second quarter.
• Dayne Beams has a possible ankle problem.
• Steven Dodd was knocked unconscious in the third quarter by team mate Dean Soloman’s knee, the stretcher was called.
Fremantle first gamers Zac Clarke and Hayden Ballantyne scored only 32 and 9 points respectively.
Collingwood had 6 players scoring 100+ points; lead by Dane Swan (167) and Alan Didak (163). Where as Fremantle only had 3; lead by Aaron Sandilands with 137 points.
Port Adelaide vs Fremantle – Round 11 match recap
Saturday, June 6th, 2009Port Adelaide – 14.10 (94)
Fremantle – 11.4 (70)
Port Adelaide have returned to the winners list by defeating an undermanned, but very determined Fremantle side on Saturday night. The visitors looked like causing an upset early, kicking 4 of the first 5 goals, but the home side clawed their way back into the game and went into the half time break just 2 points down. The second half started the completely opposite way to the first with Port kicking 4 of the first 5 goals of the game to take the lead and they never lost it from there. Port Adelaide held on to post a 24 point win over the Dockers.
Turning points of the match The 6 goal to 2 third quarter from the Power really buried the Fremantle side. After starting so well, Fremantle let the Port Adelaide side go into half time thinking they could win, and they came out determined to do just that in the second half. Key Players for Port Adelaide David Rodan – Really lifted the Power side with 2 of their 6 third quarter goals. Finished the night with 3.1 from 19 touches and 4 tackles. Kane Cornes – Tagged Paul Hasleby, who may have got 25 touches himself but his efficiency was shocking. Cornes finished with 34 of his own and also kicked a goal. Jacob Surjan – 25 disposals, 7 marks and 7 tackles for the night. Key Players for Fremantle Paul Duffield – Played somewhat of a role on Justin Westhoff, but managed to collect 29 disposals and 5 tackles while running away from his man. David Mundy – Collected 22 disposals for the night, with 4 tackles, 4 marks and kicked 2.1 in an all round effort. Aaron Sandilands – Dominated the ruck as usual with 27 hit outs, but also gathered 20 disposals and 6 marks to really beat the Brendan Lade – Dean Brogan ruck duo. Musings from the match · Sandilands had 27 hit outs, Port Adelaide had the same as a team. · Port had 48 more disposals than the Dockers. · Fremantle had a disposal efficiency of 2% better than Port Adelaide. · Port Adelaide won the clearances, 41 to 34. · Port Adelaide also won the inside 50’s, 52 to 40. Supercoach news For Fremantle: Paul Duffield had yet another good game, posting 128 this week. Greg Broughton and Matthew DeBoer both scored well as youngsters with 92 and 84 respectively. Chris Tarrant once again played in defence and scored 75 on Warren Tredrea. For Port Adelaide: David Rodan managed 138 but I wouldn’t be expecting this sort of score from him regularly, he has averaged just 67.75 prior to this round. Travis Boak copped a knee ligament injury so check on that during the week. Kane Cornes looks good, once again posting over 100.
North Melbourne vs Fremantle – Round 9 match recap
Sunday, May 24th, 2009North Melbourne – 14.14 (98)
Fremantle – 12.13 (85)
Fremantle have yet again showed they have potential but as so often happens with them they failed to get over the line. The Dockers blasted out of the docks in the first quarter kicking 6 goals to North Melbourne’s 2 and looked set to upset the home side. The Roos, however, had other plans regrouping and kicking 6 goals to 3 in the second term to be just 5 points down at the main break. Trailing off in the second half Fremantle only managed to kick a further 3.6 in comparison to North’s 6.6. The young North Melbourne outfit got over the line by 13 points after being challenged late in the game.
Turning points of the match For Fremantle: A stunning first quarter which should have given them momentum going forward, but instead seemed to make them think the job was done. For North Melbourne: Firstly they kicked 5 of the first 6 goals in the second quarter to briefly give them the lead before Fremantle hit back. This quarter gave them the momentum the Fremantle should have capitalised on after the first quarter and they managed 7 of the last 10 goals of the game to win it. Secondly there was the second ever deliberate rushed behind rule was called against Steven Dodd with Aaron Edwards kicking the consequent score levelling goal in the third quarter. Key Players for North Melbourne David Hale – Kicked 5 goals for the Roos as the big unit up forward. Brady Rawlings – Played a tagging role on Hasleby but frequently ran off his man to collect 24 valuable touches and laying 7 strong tackles. Josh Gibson – Moved onto the dangerous Pavlich in the second quarter. He really stepped up late in the game to give the Roos some more run in the corridor collecting 20 possessions for the day. Key Players for Fremantle Paul Hasleby – Beat Rawlings on the day by collecting 26 touches, 5 tackles, taking 2 marks and kicking 2.1. Matthew Pavlich – Beat Michael Firrito in the first quarter but then Gibson moved onto him in the second. He still managed 18 touches and kicked 3.2. Luke McPharlin – Only took 6 marks but kicked 4.2 from his 13 touches including 2 important second quarter goals and 1 final quarter goal to give the Dockers a sniff at victory, unfortunately for them it wasn’t enough. Musings from the match · The crowd was a measly 15,436 in a disappointing display from the North Melbourne “faithful”. · Fremantle had its best ever first term not only against the Roos but at the Docklands as well, kicking 6.5. · North Melbourne dominated the marks with 106-75. · That same team also had 19 frees to 9. · The contested possession count went to the Roos as well with 121-113, as did the uncontested possession count with 238-217. · Both teams disposal efficiency was only separated by 0.23%, with the Roos on top. · The Dockers had 42 clangers to Norths 27. · The Dockers had 11 more inside 50’s, but on the flipside the Roos had 11 more rebound 50’s. · The Dockers dominated the hit outs with 52 to 15, Hamish McIntosh had 11 for the Roos while big man Aaron Sandilands had a lazy 43. Supercoach news Nathan Grima – Played his second game for a return of 92 after his debut of just 38. His second game performance means he will be increasing in value in the weeks to come. At $94,200 he could be a good trade down and money maker for you. Sam Wright – Also played his second game and followed up his first game of 41with an impressive 81, nearly doubling it. Also at $94,200 he is a nice cheap forward who could be in a similar position as Grima but for your forward line should you need it. Chris Tarrant – Never thought I would see the day where he could be of value but nevertheless he seems to have reinvented himself as a defender. Averaging just 64 points so far he has dropped by $89,200 but after a couple of solid performances he could be an interesting one to watch. He scored 71 on Carlton big man Brendan Fevola, 82 on Hawthorn 2008 Coleman Medallist Lance Franklin, and 85 on North Melbourne big man Drew Petrie this week.
Carlton vs Fremantle Review
Wednesday, May 13th, 2009Carlton – 11.15 (81)
Fremantle – 13.10 (88)
Fremantle has stayed on the winners list by holding off a fast finishing Carlton side up on the Gold Coast on Saturday night. In a game that Fremantle looked to dominate for most of the night, it ended up going right down to the wire with the Dockers only winning by 7 points. Big man Aaron Sandilands dominated in the ruck with a massive 42 hit outs, and the news only got worse for the Blues with Brendan Fevola coming off inside the first minute of the match with a mystery hammy/glute/lower back injury and struggling all night.
Turning points of the match The Dockers went into the first break with a slight lead over the Blues, but came out firing in the second quarter kicking the first three goals unanswered. The Blues were kept in touch by Jarrad Waite who kicked three goals for the quarter, but the 7 goal to 5 quarter in favour of Fremantle was to be the deciding factor with each team only kicking 3 goals each in the second half. Key Players for Carlton Bryce Gibbs – Had plenty of the ball with 31 disposals collecting 13 marks along the way. He also kept the pressure up when he didn’t have it himself, laying 6 tackles. Marc Murphy – Went head to head with Byron Schammer and won that battle collecting 31 disposals and taking 7 marks. He also managed a goal to top off the night. Jarrad Waite – Moved forward in the second quarter and kept his side in the hunt kicking three of Carlton’s five goals for the quarter. In what was an all round effort he also gathered 25 disposals, 7 marks and 4 tackles. Heath Scotland – Running all night he picked up 35 disposals and 7 marks. Key Players for Fremantle Aaron Sandilands – As previously mentioned he dominated the ruck as you could expect. 42 hit outs and 25 possessions compared with Matthew Kreuzer’s 10 hit outs and 19 possessions speaks for itself really. Paul Hasleby – Managed to collect 32 possessions and 5 marks for the night. David Mundy – Only gathered 23 touches but from those he had 8 marks and kicked 2.2 including an important goal in the third quarter to put his team up by 21 points. Musings from the match · Fremantle has three wins on the trot, what is going on here? · Brendan Fevola came off in the opening minute with what is believed to be a back or glute problem. · Fev was also held to just 1.1 by forward turned defender Chris Tarrant, who seemingly may have saved his career because of it. · Both teams had the same amount of kicks. · Fremantle had over double the hit outs of Carlton, 45 to 21. · Carlton had more free kicks, 20 to 9. · Carlton had both more contested and uncontested possessions, but seemed unable to convert that to points on the board. · In a winning side, Fremantle had more Clangers (51-38) · Carlton had 12 more inside 50’s but were inaccurate in front of goal, kicking 5 more behinds than goals. Supercoach news Stephen Hill – Seems to have found his feet at senior level averaging over 100 points in the last two weeks. Those who have had him from the start will be happy. Brendan Fevola – His roller coaster season continued only managing 29 points against the Dockers. It might be worth trading him before his price plummets too much if you get the opportunity. Chris Judd – Despite averaging over 100 points this season his price has still dropped since the start. I would be looking at bringing him in if I had the cash because I wouldn’t expect that his average would drop too much. Aaron Sandilands – 42 hit outs and 25 disposals for 161 points. That is all.

Adelaide – 15.14 (104)
Adelaide have returned to the winners list with a good win against the Dockers, who despite a fast start and a spirited comeback that was always going to come at home, were poor for most of match.
Turning points of the match
The Crows kicked 5 unanswered goals in the second quarter which really stamped their authority on the game. From there it seemed like Adelaide only had to lift their game when challenged to coast to the eventual result.
Key Players for Fremantle
Paul Hasleby – 28 possessions which included 1 goal 1 behind in a solid performance for the losing team.
Byron Schammer – 24 touches and 3 tackles as Schammer worked harder than most in his team.
Key Players for Adelaide
Taylor Walker – Great last quarter to help close out the game, finished with 3 goals could of easily had more but for inaccurate kicking.
Jason Porplyzia – 4 goals in another good performance.
Musings from the match
• Fremantle could be looking to emulate West Coast against the Saints.
• Adelaide are a solid side, this being their second win on the road.
• Adelaide has more young players than most realize, they are performing solidly too.
• Luke McPharlin is likely to miss at least one match for his charge on Stevens
• Stephen Hill is starting to find his feet.
• Stevens went off on a stretcher from the McPharlin charge.
• Fremantle has too many passengers.
Supercoach/Dreamteam news
As mentioned above, keep an eye on Stevens injury status and watch for McPharlin getting rubbed out.
The young players of Adelaide look the goods Andy Otten, Patrick Dangerfield and Jared Petrenko performing well with 83, 102 and 75 SuperCoach points respectively.
Paul Hasleby is looking the goods with 107 Dream Team points and 131 SuperCoach points in a losing side, those of you who have him should be grinning.
