Western Bulldogs vs. Port Adelaide – NAB Cup Semifinal Match Preview

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Friday Night / Etihad Stadium
$1.36 vs. $3.15

Both the Western Bulldogs and Port Adelaide have gone through the first two rounds of the NAB Cup in quite a solid fashion. The Dogs have beaten the Brisbane Lions by 8 points in wet weather conditions and then blasted away Hawthorn by 57 points. On the other hand the Power has convincingly beaten Adelaide by 56 and West Coast by a massive 78 points last week.
The Dogs will take a very strong line up into tonight’s game missing only 3 players from their best 22 (including Brad Johnson and Daniel Giansiracusa), but Port Adelaide will be getting back Warren Tredrea, Robbie Gray, Travis Boak and Dean Brogan to strengthen their team. A tough match one would think. On the scoreboard Port Adelaide seems to look the better team, but the Dogs are out in force and look strong enough to win the NAB Cup for 2010. (more…)

Western Bulldogs Season Review

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Expected Finish – 3rd -5th
Actual Finish – 3rd

15 Wins, 7 Losses

Another season that has now left Bulldogs supporters asking the same questions of 2008 “What if? ”. The Dogs were able to produce another solid home and away season and went into the finals in 2009 full of confidence. They narrowly lost to Geelong, defeated Brisbane easily and then lost to the Saints in a close match many believe they should have won. The Dogs players have again improved this season and look more and more like contenders.

That being said the Dogs still have some improvements to make. The big games seem to never produce what the fans want and they are constantly left with that burning question that are still yet to be answered.

Backline

The Dogs defence this season was ranked 6th in the league only letting in 1,940 points for the year. The emergence of Brian Lake has been one of the best things for the team. He became an All Australian player this season and was the backbone of the team. Tom Williams missed a bit of Football in 2009 which did hurt the Dogs in some of their big games when they needed another tall. Hargrave and Gilbee also had good seasons. The backline of the Dogs will benefit from a full pre season from Williams. All Australian Dale Morris also performed well throughout the season showing that the Dogs have the talent down back to match it with the best.

Midfield

The strength of the Dogs is well and truly its midfield which again performed to a very good level in 2009. Last years Brownlow medalist Adam Cooney had another consistent year but did not reach the highs of 2008. The players you expect to perform through the centre certainly did with Griffin, Cross, Boyd and Higgins all able to have solid years. The standouts for me however would be the emergence of Callan Ward who will only improve after this season. Jason Akermanis adds so much to this team as he can go forward and kick goals and also be thrown in the centre to break a game open. He had 96 inside 50s for the season and in my opinion will have to be there for the Dogs to win a premiership.

Forwards

The Dogs forward line again was very high scoring in 2009 ranking second for points scored in 2009. However I think that the forward line is not suitable in big games which was proven in 2009 finals series results. The Dogs have an even spread of goal kickers which does help them produce big scores as they are not reliant on one player. Johnson only kicked 37 goals this season down on his recent form. Mitch Hahn also kicked 38 goals for the season. Akermanis gets a mention here as he was able to kick 43 goals for the season. The strong midfield always chips in with goals but there is one key missing in this forward line which I will touch on in the players needed section.

Rucks

The rucks of Hudson and Minson both had good years for the Dogs. Hudson managed 24 games and 388 hit outs for the season. Minson played all 25 games for the season and showed some good improvement, 365 hit outs, 43 inside 50s, 70 tackles and averaged 12 disposals per game. Spent some time in the forward line and kicked 16 goals for the season.

Players needed for next year

Key Forward, plain and simple I don’t think the Dogs can continue to threaten the better teams without a key forward in their team. The players do a great job at the moment but I believe with the delivery from the midfield a dominant key forward would sure up their team and make them a fantastic chance for the flag in 2010. Like him or not a fit Barry Hall is the best fit for the Dogs, a one year contract and the chance of a flag. Chase him and chase hard is my view.

Looking Forward

Another season that was so close yet so far for the Dogs. The supporters are beginning to become restless and will want some results from their current list of players. Preliminary finals are good but will not have this team remembered. The list is their and the players have the talent. 2010 should be another good year for the Dogs and I would be tipping another good attempt at the premiership.

If you add a key forward into the mix for the Dogs the chances increase dramatically. The finals that they are losing could so have easily been won with the aid of a big forward that can impact a game.

Geelong vs. Western Bulldogs – Qualifying Final preview

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

SportsBet Odds – $1.89 vs. $1.95
2nd vs. 3rd

The first week of the finals has been decided. The Cats and Dogs are again pitted against each other in a finals encounter. The clash shapes up as one of the best games of the first week with the Dogs full of confidence and the Cats showing some good form last week with key players settling back into the team.

Previous Encounters

Round 21, 2009
Western Bulldogs 16.14. (110)
Geelong 14.12. (96)

The Western Bulldogs and Geelong Cats have played out another classic encounter under the roof of Etihad Stadium. The Dogs made up for their earlier loss in the season by over coming a Geelong team that refused to give in. The last quarter was the most telling for the game where the Cats just made too many errors at critical stages. The win for the Dogs ensures a top 4 finish in season 2009 and a double chance in September. The Cats however will look at this game thinking it was one that they probably could have won but more worrying for the Cats is another injury to Chapman. …Read more…

Round 9, 2009
Geelong 17.14.(116)
Western Bulldogs 17.12. (114)

Geelong has defeated the Dogs in a thriller at the dome. In front of 44,600 people the Bulldogs have showed they may well be the third side in 2009 with an impressive display against the undefeated Cats. In Akers 300th game the dogs almost clinched victory with the final kick of the day with Brad Johnson missing after the siren. Geelong will learn a lot of lessons from this game but it is the Dogs who will gain the most from this hard fought and entertaining game of Football.

Key Players for Geelong

Matthew Scarlett – Scarlett has had another great season in 2009 and is an experienced campaigner in finals. This is his third straight finals series and if the Cats are to win he will need to shut down who ever he pays on. Johnson if he is playing deep will be a great match up would love to see it happen.
Likely match-up: Scott Welsh

Gary Ablett – Now a very experienced player for the Cats and generally plays well in big games. Plays well in finals when it counts so I would expect him to get a lot of attention from the Dogs. If Ablett is able to get free he will be very damaging considering the Ablett record when it comes to finals.
Likely match-up: Liam Picken

Cameron Mooney – For the Cats to win this Match Mooney needs to kick goals and get a fair bit of the ball. Being the key forward for the Cats the workload rests on his shoulders whether he likes it or not. Mooney’s kicking has been an issue all season lets hope he can get it right.
Likely match-up: Brian Lake

Changes
In: Paul Chapman, Travis Varcoe
Out: Ryan Gamble, Simon Hogan

Key Players for the Western Bulldogs

Jason Akermanis – Hard to go past as one of the Keys to the Dogs success going into September. Akermanis as we know has a very extensive finals resume being part of the Brisbane Lions trifecta. If Akermanis can get going Geelong will be hard pressed to stop him. Has been playing good football and is vital for September success.
Likely match-up: James Kelly

Brian Lake – The Dogs best defender by a long way in my mind. If he can shut down Mooney then the Dogs I think will win the game. His performance this round can set up the rest of the finals series for the Dogs. Has had a fantastic year will be interesting to see how he goes with the finals pressure and now expectation.
Likely match-up: Cameron Mooney

Will Minson – This week is his chance to really dominate a game and make a name for himself. He is coming up against Blake who is unconvincing at the best of times and Ottens who is only having his second game back from a long period out. Minson is dangerous because he gets a fair bit of the ball and can also move forward to stretch the Cats defence. With the aid of Hudson the rucks have the chance to really make a mark on this match.
Likely match-up: Brad Ottens / Matthew Scarlett

Changes
In: Griffen, Hudson
Out: Andrejs Everitt, Sam Reid

Prediction

On recent form and encounters the Dogs should really be going into this game as favourites. Having said that the two encounters this season have been very close and this will more than likely be another tough clash. If the Dogs can shut down Mooney and restrict the Cats midfield it will go along way to winning this match. The Cats on the other hand will be hoping they can put together a consistent four quarter effort and get goals from the big names of Mooney and Chapman.

This game is so hard to pick my heart is saying Geelong but my head leads me to say the Dogs. I am a loyal supporter so I am tipping my Cats to get over the line in a very close encounter Geelong to reverse last games result and win by 14 points.
